i rebuilt my engine about 1 and a half years ago done forgies etc and thought idd do it properly and buy a new oil pump and gtr pumps were cheaper then standard pumps so a new one was bought now a year and a half later the oil pump **** itself the gears inside broke apart and everyone i seem to talk to about it says the gtr oil pumps are known for breaking apart so i want to warn u guys keep ur rb30et oil pump dont use a gtr pump lucky it only happened about a minute from my house and that rb30s dont run solid lifters so could here there was no pressure
cheers brendan
I find this very weird as i have one, five friends have them and never ever have any of us had problems with them in years! Also one of my friends runs a workshop that works almost entirely on vls and skylines and he has never ever heard of this happening either. You would think that there would be a lot of hype on the skyline forums regarding this too!
Maybe you got a damaged one or a non genuine one?
i think its to do with having the gtr pump with a single cam head.there is less oil flowing through the single cam head compared to the twin cam head so therefore the pressure is greater.this puts more strain on the pump maybe causing it to fail?
just a theory
hey do they fit straight on the crank or do you need an adapter?
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
Don't oil pumps have a relief valve that bleeds off some of the oil flow when a set pressure is reached tho - therfore the maximum pressure the pump can deliver is set by the pump and not the engine?
GTR pump gears are a sintered metal (I think) which crackin the high stress points, whereas N1 pumps are billet and do not (generally) crack and break.
Arn't there also some slight differences in the drive for the different model gtr pumps.
I seem to remember a comment that the R32 pumps were slightly different to later models.
the bleed is near the oil filter.its the little ballbearing you can see.it is also a possibility that the valve cannot flow enough to let the pressure drop down to normal.the valves can also get stuck.i was reading on a camshaft companies website once that they do not recommend hi flow oil pumps on street engines because they eventually fail due to the excessive load placed on them
sorry to hear about that Brendan (congrats on the power as well!) Pete is trying to warn me off using my GTR pump and do the same mods he done to his RB30 pump (which I am guessing you will do now).

Which is exactly the reason for my rebuild.....I don't know where my ball and retainer got to but I only had a spring in mine.
Nope, my bottom end was completely original never been opened. It ran for f*ckin ages like that, the dash gauge showed good pressure too. I was pretty surprised when I found the ball missing.
rev limiter was on 7200 made power till 6800
i have rang a few workshops and they have all said gtr pumps are **** and break same as pete(jet88c)he went through the same thing when buying his oil pump was told not to use the gtr pumps
so dont know why u havent heard of it carcrazy
hey john yeah was so spewin only had the car runnin for one day
i must say it was a good day tho lol
im gonna do same as pete take the rb30 pump to rigoli and get it modified
modify the relief spring to hold the valve shut a little longer
what else can really be done , cept making new crescents.
interesting though , please do tell , and what price do rigolis charge
cheers

Ummm the GTR pump uses a piston on a spring exactly the same as the vl pump not a ball bearing so i dunno where you got that from.
GTR pumps have cast steel cresent gears not sintered metal. We tried to break one the other night (Gear) and all it did was bend. Sintered metal is extremely brittle due to the molecular makeup of the metal.
You know what I meant. Its crap metal in a GTR pump and billet steel in an N1 pump.
I hope they last cause I have one!

So all RB series pumps have a piston and spring setup, and this is what controls pressure. The ball bearing relief on the filter housing is like a back-up over pressure bleed. Correct???
