hey guys,
Im currently stripping my vlt engine and im just about done except for the oil pump & the crank. Ive undone all the bolts holding the crank in & same with the oil pump. Im assuming i need to take off the gear on the crank that runs the timing belt. Is this correct?? And how do i take this gear off, cz i cant.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
thanks

theres nothing holding it on, just two keys on the nose of the crank to make it turn. once you've taken the bolt off of the crank pulley you should be able to slide it off. give it a 'light' tap with a hammer if you need to.

check for any burs on the crank.they will stop it from sliding off.
hit it with wd40 to help it slide

I just pulled the oil pump and timing belt gear off mine all in one go. The gear is pretty hard to get off by itself.

That front sprocket is the hardest thing to get off, I got my rb30 one off failry easily, but then when I tried getting one off an rb20det block, it wouldnt budge. If its gonna be like that one, You'll have to either heat it up and try and pry it off, otherwise do what I did and drill and tap two holes in the pulley and get a puller on it... (even then it was still a c@nt) I hope for your sake it comes off easily because I broke a few tools, smashed a few things, and finshed up stuffing the oil pump!... Good luck!

hah i had to pull mine off to......forklift smashed the bottom of the pump and bent the sump upwards and made a huge crack tried for 4 days to get that damn gear off but it wouldnt budge. was gonna tap it but when i went to all the wreckers that had this cog they were all stuck and couldnt get em off either so i gave up and metal puttied it.....so far so good, should last until rebuild time in a few months

There is an easier way I thought of. I had an RB30 with a totally rusted on gear which wouldn't budge. If you have the crank at no.1 piston at TDC, the key should be almost facing vertical (up). Get your angle grinder out, and grind from the top of the gear down (directly above the key), that is, grind the whole top off the gear until you hit the key slot, and you will find that the key slot in the gear can be cut down to, to split the gear (i.e. creating a opening the whole width of the gear, which will release all pressure holding it on), without too much trouble as long as you do it carefully, and without touching the crank or the oil pump (I put rubber hose over the front of crank to protect it in case of slipping with the grinder, and thin aluminium sheet behind gear to protect oil pump). You will of course destroy the gear and the key, but, at least you can get it off this way if badly rusted on without damaged anything else.
