Don't do it! They're cheap but in a heavier VL they need the ring revved out of them. Turbo your N/A or go for an RB25.

i've got an RB25DET in mine, like monstas4 said, dont go the rb20, they dont have the torque required. U will need an enginners cert, whick is about 400, depending on who you go to. To get the engineers cert, u will need a noise test as well. I'll help u out with any info i can if you end up going ahead with it.

I had an rb20det in my calais, not worth it. You guys have plenty of rb30et bits and pieces over there, I wish it were the same here in NZ! So like MonstaS4 said, turbo your existing rb30.

Here we go....again... 1. Expect to pay $2000-2500 for a manual half cut. Probably more if you need to buy it remotely and have it freighted out to Orange. 2. Read this thread -> http://www.calaisturbo.com.au//showthread.php?t=17097 3. Ring the RTA and ask them for your closest signatory. Discuss the project with them and they will be able to tell you what needs to be done and what engineering will likely cost. 4. Take all "that is **** idea" comments with a grain of salt. You might like the power delivery of the RB20, you might not. It's a personal opinion. My advice would be to see if you can get a ride in a well set up VL RB20 or R32 skyline and see if you like it.

A VL is lighter than a R32. Well the exec is. The calais is heavier than a R32. That is for N/A VL and a Turbo R32.

yeah, i just got a blue slip done on my VL SL, and the tare weight is 1210. a skyline is 1290kg so there is a 80kg advantage on the VL SL... i am looking forward to my rb20det conversion... i have never been in a 3L VLT, never really been in a turbo car at all. but the thing that has made me want to get a rb20det, is that it can still be a powerful engine with the right mods, and it is also a bit more economical in standard trim than just a stock rb30

I'd give it a whirl, you can get them to churn out 200rwkw so that'd be a decent spot for ya. Just look at all the r32 gts-t's running a ****load of power.. Mind you they suck until boost comes on.

They might produce some big power, but the extra cubes of a 25, 26 or 30 will give a lot more torque. Torque makes a streetcar good to drive. I liken it to few bikes i've owned. A GSXR600 flew when it got into it's 'powerband', but i had to be constantly up and down gears to keep it there. I now ride a 916 Ducati monster which has plenty of low and midrange grunt (read:torque) to punch out of corners quickly without changing gears all the time. They both had similar power but the duke had twice as much torque.

I still stick by my point #4. Also, can someone please explain how much "big power" is?

if you do it make sure u change diff ratios to 4.11, and don't keep the 3.45's. 3.45 + rb20=gutless

A lot of people report the R32's have a 4.4 diff ratio.

I agree browny that power delivery is up to personal opinion. Power=Torque x RPM, so an engine that has more torque will deliver the same power but at lower RPM than an engine with lower torque. Lower RPM = less stress, more reliability in the long term.

Speak to SSS automotive, get your motor through there, 2 mates have gone through them and had no problems, have got everything required Make sure u have the injectors cleaned before u start, Check all the inlet pipes for crap etc, check the throtel body aswell, Check all the spark plugs and the Sump, replace the themo stat and timeing belt before u start, there all very basic to do, shouldn't have tomany issues, U can get the wiring diagram for $150 and is pretty streight forward, make sure u are getting the Silver Rocker Cover RB20det, if u need any help give me a buz Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
