Mine chews through a lot...300-350 k's to a full tank (5L V8 VL) where as i've heard some people saying their 6's get 500's to a tank.

eyah mine used to be a carby 304 but its now injected, mine got 305 kms to a tank not driving fast, the injected 5litre gets almost twice as much!!!

With sheer capacity in mind, the 4.9/ 5.0L carby probably would use more fuel than the inline 6. Furthermore, coupled with the fact that the RB30E is fuel injected [and was introduced later (1986) than the 4.9L V8], there is more technology in it, which should (in theory) improve fuel economy. The six uses approx. 1L per 7.9 km. (Wheels, October 1986).

yeah, VL V8's are horrendous on fuel, which is made all the worse by the auto only transmission (unless you buy HDT or HSV of course). Mine was getting around 260k's to a tank, maybe 300 with a bit of freeway driving. Like sikcalais, mine is also now injected and uses HEAPS less fuel and actually starts in the morning. Even injected, it'll still use more fuel than a 3.0 purely because it's 66% larger capacity.

V8's are very heavy on the fuel I have a long range 84 litre tank and I get 400km's to a tank strickly city driving before my fuel gague reads empty although I have never put more that 72 litres in the tank so I guess my fuel gague is out or I was told the wrong size for the tank. I have a 600 holley that has been rebuilt, rejetted and dyno tuned for 98 only, whateva cam hsv put in the sv88 I believe it's stage 2 or some crap like that and a 2500 stally. In a good running rb30e with a much smaller tank you can expect 400-500 kms to a tank city driving

There's always a portion on unusable fuel in the tank that the pickup can't actually pickup. It's around 5 litres or so, so if you've got 72L in, you would not have had much fuel left. Still, 400k's with the long range tank aint too bad. I remember reading the Motor Mag article on the SV88. It averaged 28.8L per 100k's on the test drive!!!

Unless u like the rumble of a v8, i would go the six every time i have owned 4 vl's and have found them to be very cheap to run, the only v8 to have if ur worried about econemy is the newer injected engines . The six with a manual r still a spirited drive and offer great value 4 $$$$$
