When i take off the car seems to shudder a bit and not pickup and go, but after a few hundred rpm it stops and its fine, then when it changes into second if the revs are really low and im just babying it, it seems to do it again a little bit.
i thought it might be an auto problem?
if i take off one of the tranny cooler lines to drain fluid out of the box, how much should come out if the car is idling in park?

Could be auto gearbox mounts worn or the tailshaft needs attention! Does the auto shift into gears good when driving?

trust me, this isnt a gearbox mount or tailshaft issue, i can feel it shuddering when i take off, but as soon as i take off the car is fine.
im thinking it MUST be something to do with the tranny fluid levels.
If i take the pan off and dump it all, how much should i be filling it back up with roughly? (i cant rely on the dipstick, it is constantly giving me bull**** readings no matter how long the car sits in drive to settle down the fluid)

Its the centre bearing holder at the CV joint. They go soft with age and allow the tailshaft to wobble when stressed under power. Replace the centre bearing rubber cradle holder thingy, and it will go away.

bingo on that happens on all cars
cheaps repair option as well like 80 bucks for a vn but could be different for vl

then what would explain the slipping of the transmission on take off, and when it changes into gear, and why, when the car is then in gear, and under load at higher rpm, all is fine? wouldnt it vibrate all the time if its the centre bearing?

i got the same prob with my car (5speed) but only really does it when its cold. But after some driving it goes away.

agreed with stimps... can happen when the car has been sittin around for a long period of time, and the weight of the tailshaft deforms the rubber centre bearing holder in one direction only, so that the hole is no longer centred - thereby creating vibration. also can happen if you do alot of towing...?

I have a similar problem. My car has a vibration that starts at about 45km/h and stops over 55-60km/h. It's not effected by what gear its in either, so i'm guessing post-gearbox.
Think I'll try that bearing holder.

04-08-04, 23:15 GMT+10#10 if it's only doing it a really low road speed under power then it's probably the tailshaft centre bearing, at low rpm and high torque the tailshaft tries to whip and pull itself out of the body mount. The rubber support on the bearing obviously prevents this. like someone else said if the rubber wears then the shaft can whip around and vibrate and it's most noticable at low rpm the shaft balances up at higher rpm. the auto slipping is probably a different problem. an auto low on fluid or that has a worn pump can shudder the drive clutches at low rpm as the hydraulics lose and regain pressure. You would also notice this at low rpm high speed.

05-08-04, 05:15 GMT+10#11 already been told by the tranny guy that its a forward engaging clutch pack issue (burnt out). that is why it is slipping and shuddering.
nothing to do with t shaft or bearing.

14-09-04, 00:29 GMT+10#12 I am having Shudder under load of 3,500Rpm upwards when it is from standstill or just giving it a bit of stick. Car starts to shudder badly then stops after I let go off Accelerator ,but if I keep it upto 3,000rpm from standstill or while driving make sure it doesnt go over Auto Transmission changes and shifts fine.
A few things that may help the Experts on here.
1.I had tailshaft on my mates workshope for 2months and I did mark the tailshaft to align it before i took it off.
2.Transmission is VLT with all new fresh Oil and Pan Gasket and stall converter was drained off all its oil and the trans filter was cleaned as well.
Oh also running AT1 computer if that helps or can cause any issues with transmission shift changes.
3.I have checked engine mounts they are all secure and firm as motor was only put in 2weeks ago.
Well hope you guys can offer some assistance.
I have done search on Shudder and read alot of the topics/posts and got some ideas but would like ppls replys on my certain dilemma will be gfreatly appreciated.
Cheers, Joe

14-09-04, 18:57 GMT+10#13 ok i had this prob. would shudder until i got to 3rd gear or uintil the car was warmed up. i adjusted my afm and she hasn't done it once again. i know every1 says "check the afm" and they are right. the afm can have such a control over the way the car runs....so go check the ohm reading on it...adjust it back to 382 (factory) and see how she goes then.

15-09-04, 00:50 GMT+10#15 Burnt forward clutch pack, I'd place money on it. Seen plenty of them and your description fits the bill perfectly.
3 to 3.5 litres of oil per service. If you r&r the valve body add another litre.
