Does anyone here know of any faults with the odometer/ speedometer readings with 1986 VL Commodores?
I investigated a 1986 Exec today and the dealer said it had only done 85000km. When I had a look at the odo for myself, I said "What the...!! Bull****- 300 000 plus!!"
He said it was a well known problem with VLs that they have inaccurate odos.
Maybe the guy who owned it was a freakin' Dyno nut or something.
What do you guys think?
Cheers.

It does happen on occasions that the odometer starts turning over 100's of kilometres at a time, but I wouldn't say it's common. More common is that it just stops working completely. Is there logbooks for this car? If there isn't, just tell him to get ****ed and look somewhere else.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I appreciate the feedback.
The car was in perfect condition, so I suggested that maybe they had put in a new dial (?)
The logbooks seemed to support what they were saying; they only went up to 95000 km.

I have had my odometer go nuts before. For each 100m that i traveled, the odometer would kindly add 11kms to it total. Needless to say i comfortably did 25,000kms that week before i was able to get it fixed. The problem was that a few of the little plastic cogs in the instrument cluster broke.
So it could happen, but there is a huge difference between 85,000km and 300,000km. Possible but highly unlikely

I had one do this, every 10kms travelled the odo went up 1000

25-07-04, 15:34 GMT+10#10 if you are unsure of the engine, get a compression test done if it comes back with good compression the motor should be alright even if it has done 300,000
I think my VL dash says 250,000 but the engine has only done like 150,000km (RB20 import)

25-07-04, 23:35 GMT+10#11 i have come accross a few VL's with dodgy tachos.
- When i purchased my car it was about 119,000kms, the car was involved in an accident and on that same night the first digit of the odometer clocked over to 3, which made it say something like 330,000km's.
- Another one i know of makes a strange winding noise and the digits move how and when they want.
In my opinoin the odometers are dodgy....

27-07-04, 12:08 GMT+10#12 mine stopped and then started goin again and was spinnin 100'000k's instead of 1k and then it stopped again and then all the numbers started spinnin and then stopped. so now instead of sayin the original 170'000k's is says 670'000k's
