I have a VP international calais (v8 with irs) sitting on FE2 susp. and there's this tapping noise coming from the front left wheel when I go over slight/huge bumps.
The reason its weird is, I get out of the car, and shake the wheel, and I can feel movement which makes me think its bearings. Although I cant hear anything when driving (i.e. squalling etc.) which makes me doubt its bearings. Whats more stranger, is that if I take the wheel off and put it back on, the movement in the wheel stops when I apply force to it. But when I drive off the shuddering/vibration starts again. And sure enough, when I come back I can shake the wheel again and get some movement.
The noise to me, seems to me like the wheel is hitting the disc or something, which I dont think is the case, since the wheels suit the car (vt international 17s) and its pretty damn tight, plus as I said it doesnt do it when I take the wheel off and put it back on. It's like a hollow tapping noise, and it has me a little worried
It's definately got some wheel movement though, I don't know exactly what else could be moving. Another interesting point I should make, is that when I took the wheel off (and I've done this a few times to check over and over), and shook the shock, disc, calliper, nothing was loose, I couldn't get any movement at all from anything I could see. so it only occurrs when there's force on the strutt.
it's definately on the left hand side on the front exactly where the wheel is, you can even feel it under your foot when in the car.
Sorry the post is so long, any help/advice/suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks guys
ur bearing plate/top strut bearing might be ****ed ? thats an idea.. maybe new front shocks would cure the problem.. they might be ****ed.. the left one more so
could be heaps of things - bearing plates, wheel bearings, tie rod end ball joint, rack end, gland nut loose. Try jacking it up, grab the wheel by hand and move the wheel top to bottom, and then side to side. top to bottom movement indicates wheel bearings, side to side indicates rack ends or tie rod ends. Then get a bar or something, put it between your tyre and the ground and lever up on it a bit, see if the strut is moving up and downthis could indicate the gland nut or strut upper bearing. See how you go, if you still have doubts get it checked out.
Check out your brakes. I've seen the brake pad become loose in the caliper (due to dodgy metal brake pad bracket things) and when you go over bumps, it'll make the noise you are describing.

That raps it up nicely.
For an investment of $40 and 30 mins of your time install some new wheel bearings. You will now know that you have good bearings. If the problem is gone great. If its not (it will have likely improved due to new bearings) then start investigating your bearing plates, ball joints and that the shocks working(ie that there is still gas in it and it hasn't leaked out). If your steering is tight, responsive and the alignment is good then your rack and tie rod ends are probably good.
my vlt wags makes a wierd noise like a squeek when ever i accelerate... sounds like it comes from front wheel... him amazin all the noises you hear without a stereo for 2weeks... lol
