i jumped into my car today, reveresed out of the of the drive, went to put it i to 1st, but the thing wouldnt come out of reverse! tried for a bit, put the clutch in and out and eventually got it out. first second third and fourth are all fine, fifth is tight tho and so is reverse. not sure whats the matter, synchro's?, but it feels expensive tho.. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

My gearbox does this too sometimes. Except my problem is with 5th gear. Topping up the oil doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. Grrr. To look on the bright side, it doesnt happen too often.

Check the master cyl for the clutch isnt empty, when clutches dont disengage they sometimes make gears hold on.

clutch master is leaking so air had gotten in. need to recon both the master and the slave. box still feels weird when i try to put it into 5th, only noticed it last weekend so hope it is only needing a change of oil

souns like your synchros for 5th and reverse are stuffed. they are on the same gear set. common problem with well worn vl's. new synchros and everything around them set me back $750 in parts only. some parts are still available through holden, but get the part no and go to nissan as they are the same no's. best of luck.

reverse works fine now, fifth wont go in at all... also noticed small puddle of oil under box today : ( gonna check it out tonight see where its comming from. Can u replace the seals on it yourself? Would u have to drop the box out to do so?

For the rear extension housing you can do it yourself. The seal is 30 bucks and takes a while, as the tailshaft has to be removed, then you pull off the cover, get a screwdriver and get the old one out.. Then get some grease and push the new one back in.. If you've got a hoist it'll cut the time drastically. I drained and added some new thicker oil at the same time.. Make sure you've got some flexible hose when it comes time to fill it up.

Had a look last night, cant tell really where its comming from except the back of the box. I think its done about 320 000 so im thinking perhaps a reuild now might be an idea. Bextor84, you leave the box inplace but just remove the tail shaft to get the rear extension off right?

Right, box doesn't have to move.. Its just awkward with the oil.. But thats easy enough too.

But if its leaking from the engine side of the box, or anywhere other then the rear extension housing then You'll have to take it out. If its leaking in the rear extension housing it'll drop through the cross member, Theres a little hole in it, which I'm guessing was there for oil drainage anyway, and it builds up in there, collects alot of dirt and drops bit by bit.

Ok some good news. Looks like its the tail shaft seal leaking and not the extension housing. I pulled the gear selector out tonight and it looks as those the mechanic who looked at it the other day put too much oil in it, so thats why its leaking. Im gonna drop out the tailshaft this weekend put a new seal in and feel it up with the correct amount. Hopefully this will fix it and i wont need to drop the box out anytime soon. Still cant get it into fifth, but cant see that i need it at the moment so think il wait before getting it rebuilt

What costs are we talking for a MX7 recondition? And is there anything you can do to strengthen them (planned 250rwkw) or is an uprated clutch all that's needed?

To recondition a MX7 is around $1500,About the strengthen bit don't think theres no need, as there a strong gearbox as they are!.
