I'm stupid. How do radar detectors work? What kind of penalties are given if you're caught with one? Thanks in advance, KS.

You're not stupid a mate of mine works for the old Super Snooper company so I can ask him how they work but basically they detect the beams sent out by radar units. Not all the beams have the energy to bounce back to the receiver so a detector picks them up I used to have one when they were legal and found quite a few false alarms caused by things like auto door openers at service stations. modern ones are quite good but it depends on the radar being used: slant/mobile/lidar and whether the unit is used just at a specific target or is in patrol mode a friend who still uses one has always told me that he has to hit the brakes very hard when it goes off ( very little warning) and that is also a tell tale sign for police to search your car for a detector Heavy penalties if you are caught with them > $1,000 and confiscation of the radar detector the hwp police have radar detector detectors which they sometimes use Russell

in qld u can have one , but if caught using it lookout same with a police scanner , though they have changed frequency etc nowadays , u can sit back and listen to the coppas all night ,but if ur found to be using a scanner to evade or intervene with police activities u get hammered

most new radar dectectors cannot be detected by "radar detector" dectectors. From memory the system is called VG-2. but dont quote me on that. Anyways the police equipment used to detect radar dectectors is ****.

Yeah they're legal in WA. A mate of mine (crazy guy, never drives less than 40 kays over the speed limit, hate being in the car with him) has one, it would always go off, he would never slow down for it. Was a bit silly.

i got one in my car..not that great in the city(mines about a yr old now and i need to update it) it doesnt pick up multinovers tll bout 100m away(although it has save me a few times) but is great for country use, was driving down south early one night cruizing at 140,it started going off, i slowed down to the speedlimit and about 1 1/2 mins later of hearing it going off its tits.. the cop drove past me, also few months later on the way back from down south was sitting on bout 120 and it started going off on a major highway, so i slowed down and the bout 1km up the rd cop car was sitting in the bushes.....so mines paid for it self, but depends where your using it i spose

when i bought my beemer it already had 1 in it,the guy told me its the top of the range etc etc and its built in behind the dash..if it detects a radar within a 1 klm radius it gives off a beep every few seconds within 750m it double beeps and if its within 600m(radars can grab you as far as 600m) it starts beeping off its tits and then switches off my radio automatically to make sure i can hear the radar beep another added bonus is i can switch it off by pressing a button with looks something a factory alarm unit but for the price of $2,500 installed is it really worth it?....its saved me many times,it actually saved me once again today and after already losing my licence 3 times its well worth every cent.

Do police scanners and detectors work in QLD? My best mate bought some hugely priced, best of the best detector from America, and it wouldnt pick up anything. Went off once when we were in the middle of no-where... and not a cop, not a car, not a building.

Thanks in advance, KS. radars work by sending a radar beam to the object, it bounces back the the 'gun' and calculates how long it took, etc. therefore giving a speed reading. lidars work exactly the same but sends a laser beam to the object instead of a radar beam, by using a laser beam it is alot more accurate and alot further distance (a couple of houndred metres by memory). but, im pretty sure the fixed cameras work by electromagnetic induction. meaning, there are a few wires mounted in the ground (say, 50 metres before the camera, then more at 25 metres) as you drive over the two sets it calculates how long it took you between the two, then works out if you were speeding or not, then takes a photo if neccesary. hope this helps a bit. not sure about the penalties, never been caught
