The V6 motors do run an active knock sensor, unlike a VLT it relies solely on the knock sensor to control the ignition timing,it keeps on advancing its timing to the max until a knock is detected then retards it back till no knock is detected, basically it keeps on updating,we notice the difference in the VN even running different blends of premium, like the VN will go rough then smooth out but not as good as if it were running on Optimax, performance also drops off (i.e. say when BP ultimate is added),once Optimax is added it will smoothen out again.
The VLT's,etc just back it off by 5 degrees when a knock is detected.
The VX is run on standard fuel as my father is a little too cheap to spend the extra 40 cents a tank on Optimax (all fuel is dear these days) and runs as rough as a VR or VS Commodore, when running on Optimax it is nearly as smooth if not as smooth as a good RB30,note the VT onwards Commodores knock sensor filters out a lot of unwanted noise like noise from roller cams, rockers, etc.
On a VP we just picked up for my sister the body is good but the motor is a bit R.S.,the timing chain is stretched and rattles which confuses the ECU into thinking the engine is knocking as it triggers the knock sensor,it also has a big end noise which doesn't help.
I am contemplating on running my motor on a VN-VP Delco ECU then rewriting the MEM-CAL using the Kalmaker SP3 software as the RB25 ECU is a little rough for that motor,I mean in the way of how the mapping is configured for my motor.
