Hey there ive got a vl but am lookin at getting a ute or panelvan something old like wb or HQ or something im just finding it hard finding information on them just wondering what anyone here knows about them?
Reliability?
Power?
fuel usage?
im on my p's until August 2005 so i was also is it worth waiting so i can get a 308 insted of 253?
or just save up and get a VP - VS ute
Hi Chatza,
Well im from hill billy land - Ballarat - Outta Melbourne
Here we have a ratio of 50% Ute - 10% VL NA/Calais - 5% Other jap car - 35% Chicks cars, bogan cars, family cars.... etc.
Kingswoods had the 186 - 202 (6 cyl) - 253 - 308 (V8) engines. All Carbie models - older models with no pollution stuff - rumors have it the workers at holden pissed in the paint and thats why they rust so easy LOL....
People will tell you that WB's are rare, but not really at all. If i can remember the wb has 202 and 308 engines.
Reliabilty really depends on you - if you serice it and look after it ive seen these type of engines go over 600ks without big problems...
Power... not much to be blunt - sure maybe the 308 but fuel consumion is a prick... sepecially on the pollution models... and also on pollution models ive noticed not alot of power - not in bottom end anyways. oh and another thing.... MOST unless modded use LRP petrol.... and prices today give it a good 6 cents higher then the normal ULP stuff.
IF it was me and you had to prick a cheapie WB panel van/shaggin wagon- 308, just dont go nuts with the exhaust mods and make it sound like a quote from the hill billys here "like a big rig!".
THEN Again dont go for any old sh@te... ya only get problems with old stuff. Get a newer model - VQ - VP - VS... depends what your gonna do with it anyways.
I hope this helps you out,
Cheers,
Daz
Thanks heaps man all helpfull info im just lookin for now gettin ideas od what there like i love the look and sound of them. but i just wanted to know a bit more.
wb.s are very reliable
use a lot of fuel about $60=350km and that was back when fuel was .76cL
and fuel here is about .15cL more than melboune.
power not huge amounts of it "stock"
and you can drive a pv with a 308 in it on P's
happy to help ya,
One good thing i might add about the older models is that the engines are basic - you can do a whole rebuild without some huge expensive tools... That and people tend to sell a 202 these days fully rebuilt for under 500 bucks...
What you after it for? work horse, street machine, show car? - i guess old or new it dont matter with any of them.
Are you just a holden man? Cause Ford utes are pretty cheap - I've seen in the melb trading post XF 250 crossflows utes for under 600 bucks.
Good luck with it,
Cheers,
Daz
If a 202 can drag a HQ around i cant see why you cant put in a rb30e... only thing is the engine would cost more then the car itself lol... that and it would be difficult to do a swap -then you might have to mod the tail shaft - working out where the computer should be placed - fuel pump... it goes on and on.... THEN finally once it its all together your still not going to get it like rocket fast because the bodys are quite heavy.

Daz

Seriously where do some of you guys get your info from??
http://www.fullboost.com.au/racing/...cyl_street.html (http://www.fullboost.com.au/racing/records/records_6cyl_street.html)
Tell Michael Munoe Torana LC GTR Holden 202ci 9.96 143 or Leon McHugh Torana LC XU1 Holden 202ci 10.23 129 and Mark Hinson Holden LJ Torana Holden 186ci 10.71 105 how under powerd there old holden red sixers really are.
look.... they are all Toranas
Power to weight ratio - light body + small but yet tuff engine = fast.
BUT were talking about HQ's and WB's utes here..... nothing compared to a hotted up Torana...
Plus from what i was guessing the bloke only wants a cheapie, not some fu(ken expensive engine in a cheap car... unless you cut the sh@t out of one of these utes and then spend thousands on a 202... MAYBE then you can get a 13 second 1/4 mile.
Any ways if you wanna spend thousands on an engine buy a rb26dett and then bung it in a sh@tty HQ.... and if your lucky you will get a 12second 1/4 mile cause its too fu(king HEAVY.
Work out that one,

Daz
It will be a worker im a gardener and will be needing something that can work im a holden boy to but lots of people are saying go the XF. But then id have to get rid of all my holden shirts.
ummmmmmmm ijd, didnt say a word about any type of car. Just made a poor comment about 6 cyld's.
Dazza102, You seam a bit high strung dude, breath abit.
I just didnt like the way you said "Seriously where do some of you guys get your info from??"
And yeah - if you chuck thousands of dollars into a motor you can make it do anything.... its just we are talking about utes and your talking about Toranas... but either way were not helping chatza with his decision.
Chatza - well maybe keep the holden shirts lol - go the VN/VQ ute - they are reasonalbily cheap... i thinking around from 3-6grand depending on what condition...V6 series 1 motor.
Cheers,
Daz
