Last night I went to start my car and as I turned the ignition I felt a weird click when I turned the key. When the car started the key wouldnt spring back and then I wasnt able to turn the car off. I had to turn it off via kill switch then disconnet the battery. Is the barrel easy to take out? Im thinking somethings popped out or come out of place, Glen

You need to take the steering wheel off to remove the ignition barrel. There's a thin slot somewhere behind the steering wheel just where the barrel inserts into the steering column, it may not be open if the barrel has not been taken out before. Poke arond with a small (really small) screwdriver until you find it. You need to insert a screwdriver into this slot so you can depress the retainer on the ignition barrel. The ignition must be in the on position for the retainer to depress. When you have depressed the retainer, pull the barrel out of the column.

i had a problem similar to yours but mine was cause it was broken into i had to turn the key to start car and turn it back so the starter motor didnt keep going. u take the wheel off and then theres a small screw undo that screw and then pull ur ignition out i cant remember if its gotta be in on or off posistion. getting the other 1 in if its new is a trick u basically gotta put it in exactly how u got the other 1 out getting it right on might take a lil time and anoyence but its only a small jon easy as. pull ur battery out better then ur car starting and acessories turning on off while ya doing it.

I have just pulled off the steering wheel, and all the bits behind it, but cant find any small screws which would screw into the barrel. Is this located behind the steering wheel or underneath the steering wheel. Also in the first reply about the slot, is that the small slot that sits right on top of the barrel? Its very narrow, and it looks too small and tight to fit a small screw driver in. Do i need to take the round casing off from behind the steering wheel as well. Its held back by some type of half washer and has a spring sitting behind it and 4 very long screws around it, Glen

There is no screw, its like jordy said, a small slot with a spring loaded retainer that needs to be depressed to slide the barrel out. You don't need to remove the round casing behind the wheel. Quote: Also in the first reply about the slot, is that the small slot that sits right on top of the barrel? Looking in from the front (with wheel and blinker switch removed) the slot is right on top of the barrel. The slot may need to be opened up a little by breaking the aloy away if it hasn't been removed before. Can send you pic if you need, pm me your email. The problem could be the cog behind the barrel or the ignition box where the wiring plugs into, it sits on top of the column.

i did this a few weeks ago made a huge difference, the little slot is about 1cm tall and to the right of the steering shaft, you have to turn the key into a specific point to enable you to push the clip in with a small blade screwdriver my guess is you have moved the cog inside the ignition and has stuffed the operation up (this cog can be seen when the barrel is out), the cog needs to be aligned so that it will run on the track which operates the stater switch i.e it will not run out of teeth... hope it was a help Neat_Cal

Im about to check it out now again. I was thought from reading previous posts that the slot is the one which is sitting right on top of the outseide of the barrel where the key goes in. Its only half a centimetre high. There is a slot that I can see the cogs moving through and has a little clip that is sticking out like its grabing hold. I pushed that in. Am I on the right track so far?!!! Glen

sit in the car in the driving position and lokk straight ahead and you will see it its about 10mm high and 2mm wide and is in line with the barrel...push that in whilst pulling the barrel out

I'll have another crack at it tomorrow. We just spent about an hour on it with no luck. Think its just a matter of getting it right

thanks all for your help. Thanks VL-CT for the pics. I had to remove the alloy from the slot to get to the spring. Got a new barrel for $30. Vl Bt1
