My MX7 is a little sick whines like a school girl in all gears including neaural, excluding 4th gear. Therefore we suspect it's the input shaft. Apparently the input shaft cannot be repaired, and this box will always make the annoying whine noise. Can anyone tell me why the input shaft cannot be repaired? It seems wierd that something that was bought out from factory cannot be repaired at all. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok ive said this a few times before, the hard casing on the main input gear and the front cluster gear(they mesh) has worn little pits in it over the years, they get to a stage where a lip of the hard case lifts and a chunk comes off, then it wears the whole gear/s hard case off. Holden DO NOT make this part any more, Nissan CAN NOT supply this part as the skyline and 300zx shafts even tho the same in size run different ratios so they are not useable in MX7's. There is no point replacing any bearings when they get to this stage as it will not quiten them down at all(i tried this), best way to beat it is run 100% lucas oil stablizer, but expect it to be hard to change gears when cold, but doing this will quiten it down a lot! Paul from KEAS has a mate that can repair the shafts but will cost more than replacing the whole gearbox setup with a newer type! JET

thanks for clearing that up Jet, i did some searching but couldnt find it. Also done a bit of searching about rb25 gearbox. Seems like an option, but i dunno if i want to go down that road. I hate compications with ****, and doing something like that is bound to get me into some strife. I'll just keep my eyes out for a good rebuilt MX7 box. thanks again

I thought you were going to swap over gearbox's with your old VLT?

I was going to, but since have decided not to. Reason being that a) will devalue my old vlt b) i believe i'd have trouble selling it and i want a fast sale. the gearbox still works fine, it's just annoying and because i'm a picky little bitch i'll want it fixed. in my area there are no VLT's for sale, so i'm thinking i should be able to gt a reasonable price for a VLT Berlina 5spd with a full service history and 170000km, that was owned locally by an old man for the past 14 odd years.
