Ok guys, I know its a simple question, but i'v never done this before.
When bleeding the brakes on a VL, do you remove the old fluid from the reservoir on the master cylinder and then add your new (different colour fluid to it) OR do you put it on top of your old fluid and they won't mix together?
I asume i'd have to remove the old fluid first?
Are there any seals i should be checking or looking out for as well?
Thanks
Paul.
The best way is to remove the old fuild from the master, if any brake fuild gets on the paint work wash it off with water ASAP as it eats away at the paint.
Top up the master with new fuild but dont put the top back on it. Its best to have 2 people to bleed the car. If you have not done it before you need someone to pump and hold the brake pedel while you have the bleeder open to let the air out etc.
You always start from the left back wheel, then move onto the right back wheel then front left then front right. While someone is bleeding it make sure that the fuild level in the master does not get low otherwise you will have to do it all again. After its done fill up the master to the max level then put the top back on and spary some water over it, then take it for a drive, but make sure you get all the air out of the system otherwise you will have to do it all again.
Hope that helps out.
Thanks Zanjara, Helps heaps.
Is There any particular Brake Fluid you's recomend to use? Holden Says to use DOT 3 Brake Fluid, I don't know if thats the best to use or not?
i use a lucas brake fuild i think its a dot4 i cannot remember if i had the bottle here i would be able to tell you but i dont...
Do you just have the normal setup?? for an NA or turbo?? nothing like slotted rotors or anything like that?
Best to use boiling water to wash brake fluid off anything, just pour a kettle over the master cyclinder and booster when your finished. Any DOT 4 brake fluid will be fine for street driving, synthetic-race type fluids with high boiling points are better if your heavy on your brakes and/or have lots of power and moded brakes and you want high brake performance.
jordy your not the only one...
at work we have bottles of water and the water comes out of the tap nothing else..
if my boss saw somone say put hot water over it i think he would have your balls for lunch!!!
putting hot waster over anything plastic is not a good idea...
Do you ever think brake fluid gets warm! They are designed to be able to take a bit of heat its a treated moly plastic. Whose you boss? its good enough for Jaguar service centre.
yes brake fuild does get hot but putting hot water on the master is not a good idea....
its like putting hot water on a cold windscreen in the morning...
i pointed out the main facts how to bleed brakes.
good on Jaguar service centre we drive holdens not jag's mate...
anyway he asked how to bleed the brakes and what brake fuild to use.. it was said and done....
hsvsux recomended ELF XT3167 fluid when i asked about the same thing,i use it now,its trully awsome,i love the stuff, not as expensive as some other fluids too

haha or cold water on a HOT windscreen thats been in the sun all day whoops... my bro did that to his old vl and put a crack right down the middle of the winscreen.. lol
as for the brakes.. i dunno if id go to the extent of boiling the kettle to go pour the water over my brakes.. but, whether u spill any fluid or not.. its still a good idea just to give it a lil wash.. being careful not to get any water into the resovior (sp?) if its got a dodgey seal. water in the fluid is the last thing u want.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
I suggest that you get a PRO to do it at a workshop. It will cost you $45 bucks and it will be the best job they can do.
Ive done home man bleeder jobs with 2 people etc and the result wasnt that good initially but after a few hours of doing it it got as good as it will get.
Save yourself the time, hasstle and money in buying brake fluid and get a pro to do it. You dont want to mess around with your brakes.
Use DOT4 only, nothing less.
I'v done it myself. It was easy to do and didn't take long. I prefer to do it myself because i know it has been done properly. There are too many dodgy mechanics out there (Sorry if any of you are mechanics, not all are dodgy).
im just bout to bolt up a newish 1' master cylender of a vs v8 to be beloved vlct. the fluid lines dont line up exactly, has any1 fitted one of these to there calais turbo? easy?
