Hey all,
as some of u know i have now got a new N/A VL Calais... the problem i have is that its costing me a sh!t load on petrol, im only getting about 200kms (if im lucky) out of $40 worth of petrol... that is way worse than my old VL Royale and both have RB30s. oh yea its auto too...
I've also noticed that wen im driving, sometimes i can smell petrol in the car... its a lot more noticable wen its raining... it might only b wen i floor it im not sure but either way its kinda concerning! i've opened the boot and had a smell and a look around in there and sometimes i can smell it in there too!
i have had a look around on the ground and stuff around the car and i can never see any petrol on the ground or anything so i dun think its leaking!
also - may or may not b related but i hav noticed wen i floor it sometimes it gets up to about 3500 or 4000 revs and then the needle on the rev counter sorta pauses and then jumps up till about 4500 revs all of a sudden!
anyways any help or suggestions would b very much appreciated!
cheers,
Jay

dvious, if you can smell petrol around the back of your car then get underneath it and take a look, you don't want a fuel leak around a hot exhaust!!!
'87Calais, get the thing tuned, you can only either have a car properly tuned for LPG or Petrol, not both, they are very different fuels.

in my old na vl i was getting about 230 ks from $20 gas. i also started to smell petrol when i used it. i found that the hoses from the fuel rail to about 4 injectors started leaking. just needed 2 be tightened. just start the car man and have a look around front and back!

Ummm... yea, i see what happened there... i meant gas being short for gasoline (petrol) not as in LPG... sorry for the confusion... so yea it aint running on LPG at all, it is 100% petrol! hope that clears that up... (i have ammended it now)
moving on... C-ME-FLY: could you smell the petrol inside the car, from leaky injector hoses??
Oh yea and of late ive noticed wen its cold (for the 1st 20 - 30mins) it back fires if under heavy acceleration. e.g. if i hav it in 1st and take it up to about 4000 revs it backfires and sh!t...
Anyone had any similar problems?? did u find a solution?? HELP please!

Check that the breather hose at the back isn't blocked too.

Hey all... i still havnt found the problem... altho i noticed it smells badly after i've filled up... would this suggest the breather hose?? - that is the one on the top of the fuel tank isnt it??
I think the breather hose was all perished and sh!t on my royale when i got it, but that was actually leaking petrol onto the ground... i havent seen any sign of this on the calais. but i guess if its just blocked and not perished then it could b that!
Anyways guys/gals any other things to try would be a great help!
Cheers,
Jay

04-06-04, 07:46 GMT+10#10 Undo the straps on your tank and have a look where the breather / overflow pipes connect to the tank itself.
The fat one on mine was/is buggered and leaves a petrol smell.
Also if your car is actually burning the fuel, black exhaust smoke is usually a sign. A buggered coolant temp sensor was making my car chaff heaps of juice, I pulled it out and gave it a rub with some fine sandpaper and fuel consumption went back to normal.
Maybe try that.
