Hey guys I can't post in the tech articles section, so I thought I'd piff it in here. You'll have to forgive the overspray on my ceptors and **** haha... Last night and this morning I changed my rear shockers, and I took some pics so I could let you guys know how to do it. I've never done a tutorial before, and my car has drums on the rear but I don't think that should change how you go about doing the suspension. Enjoy!
First of all, loosen up all your wheel nuts a bit and jack up the car on one side, securing it with a chassis stand, making sure the wheel is clear of the ground as you will be removing it to access the shock absorber:
The shock absorber will now be fully exposed at the bottom end allowing you access to the bolt that secures it onto your diff housing:
Remove the bolt using a spanner and ratchet, or in my case a pair of ratchets. Both the nut and the bolt are 17mm metric, and should come out fairly easily. Once the bolt is out the diff housing will lower slightly, but only a small amount. You may want to secure it with a small jack if you have one available. Use abit of WD40 if the bolt is stuck:
At the top of the shock absorber there is a thread with a pair of 15mm nuts on it. This was the biggest pain of the whole changeover process. To remove the top nut hold the bottom one with a spanner or shifter, while loosening and removing the top one with a ratchet.
The shock absorber will drop out with a couple of taps to the thread at the top. Once it's out simply remove the rubber bushes at the top of it along with all the retaining washers etc:
Fit in your lowered spring making sure it all lines up properly, then bolt your new shocker in from the top. You will now have to jack the brake up or lift it enough to put the bolt into the bottom of your shock absorber. Tighten all the related bolts as far as you can. Also remember, if the ****head who sprayed your car filled your wheel arches with whatever colour the car is, but out a spraycan of matt black and paint the insides:
Put the wheel back on and tighten up all the nuts, then lower the car back onto the rim gently making sure the spring sits in correctly, and hopefully you'll have something that looks kinda like this, but without a half painted interceptor lol:
I hope this little guide has come in handy to you guys, if you need any further clarification just pop me a pm! By the way the shockers that I installed are monroe gt gas shortened shockers, which you should be able to grab for around the 120 dollar mark, along with a pair of the shortest springs king sell. Good luck and happy lowering!

You gun!
i just got my front ones done, cost me 360 cos the mechanic payed 220 for monroe gt gas shox, he got ripped off. (btw i didnt get it lowered)
thats the last time i let him do shox!
toyvlt, even considering this is your first tutorial, i'de say you've done gr8 man, nice job!
I little tip to save time, undo the top nut in the boot while the car is still on the ground and you wont need to hold the shaft while undoing it, then do as Strat said.
Also if your lowering your car and cant afford shortend shocks, get some camira sedan shocks, there a perfect fit and about 4" shorter!

Lol, he would have got them cheap, on a trade account, but marked them up a whole lot when he was figuring out his "retail" price.
I dunno, but it sounds like you were the one who got ripped off :/
Thanks for the comments guys, sorry if i missed any small points. When you want to get the factory springs out either drop the diff, use coil compressors or an angle grinder if there isn't too much pressure on the coils. Fairly simple. Enjoy!
well done strat it looks even better when you see it with your own eyes!!!!
also the best way to get the factory spring out would be undo the shock from the diff and take the spring out.. thats only if the top rubber is still thick etc...
also front shocks are not even $220....

dude i think you were the one that got ripped just like OldGold said.. also i dont know where you get your car done but **** mate you get charged that much to put brand new front shocks in your car??? with the price being $220 well monroe gt gas lowered shocks are around the $150 mark thats trade price. so he made 70 bucks out of you for the shocks and on top of that made another $140 for labour geez i think i would be going somewhere else.
yeah what are the prices going for these?? what would be a reasonable price for low springs and shocks plus the labour for fitting??? any ball park figure would be great!! -- also, anything different for the springs and shocks for a wagon??
springs come in a pair you can pay from 100 bucks to what ever they want to charge you..
he has used king springs....
umm lower shocks in the ass end to suit the lower springs is around the 100 bucks mark and fronts are more about the 170 mark i would have to say..
for a place to fit them well it depends on how much they charge per hour...
yeah, i guess i did get ripped off, i just assumed he was telling the truth cos i know the guy and he's alright, really nice, kinda old, he normally dux stuff cheap 4 my family, oh well i'll liv, lol
so YLO747.. why is your car still a bit high tho?
Are you sure they are king spring ultralows?
To me they look like my superlows...???
Also... i dunno bout the camira shocks.. camiras were very dodgey to this day.!
BeeJay: i suggest to you that before you do post anything make sure you know what your on about...
1 new spings and 1 shocks 2 weeks it takes for them to settle in... he has ceptors on the car after the work he had done.. now he has 18's on it and it sits damm fine... unlike you he dont need to photoshop his car and talk about how much bull**** his car pulls...
also one more thing before you even bother to talk about camira shocks make sure you know what your on about.. they are pretty much the same size as shorten shocks and they do the job just as good.. so make sure you know what your talking about....
Strat: with the VY SS the car looks heaps better dude

mate ill assume the nick beejay is in reference to what you give to other men. the car has no interior in it, no motor, no gearbox, no system... ever thought of how much all that weighs ****head? i guess you dont need that to make your car sit low seeing as you can take your fatass mum for a ride...
