occaionally when im going down a long slight hill ill shift my auto VL into neutral, and ill start acceleration faster than if i left it in gear. this doesnt really surprise me, but im wondering is there an advantage to shifting into neutral? i mean, the engine will be at lower revs, and you will travel at a faster speed, no load on the engine, use less fuel etc anyone care to give some negatives? i wouldnt have thought that shifting back into drive while rolling at 50km/h couldnt be too fantastic for the gear box cheers

Maybe just a bit dangerous if you need to accelerate quickly, Dont think it would hurt your gearbox slotting it back in to top gear while going those sorts of speeds. When it took my VL down to Geelong to get the auto replaced, I could put it in second and booster up, and stay at the same speed. It would just rev and not move, slightly slipping auto prob. :P

It is illegal in NSW to drive your car in angel gear (neutral). I think it is because if the car stalls you have no vaccuum to brake and the power steering fails. Even in an auto the torque converter is enough to keep the engine rotating even if it wants to stall like if you run out of fuel. Today the ECU in my WRX crashed (thanks to a faulty imobilliser keypad) and I had to engine brake it to a stop down hill which was novel. As soon as I stepped on the clutch to back down gears the power steering locked up and the brakes packed it in. Hairy moment.

lol funny one turboluke titicaca, im not sure why this is but the gregorys recommends not driving the car in neutral any faster than 50km/h and not for any longer than 200m at a time, apparently it is bad for some parts in the drivetrain (not sure what), does anyone know what might be the problem? i very much doubt it would do anything bad, i drop my car into neutral every time i turn off the freeway cause i know i gotta slow down and its easier to break at low speeds while in neutral, its suprising how much sifference it makes, maybe we can set up a guide to driving cheaply, let me start it. tips to driving cheaply: - drive in neutral down hill (saves fuel) - accelerate slowly but drive fast (saves fuel) - switch to neutral to brake to stop (saves brake pads) - pull back seats out (weight reduction therefore saves fuel) lol dont worry i didnt do that last one

You don't have proper control in neutral: you're coasting. and as for Quote: i drop my car into neutral every time i turn off the freeway cause i know i gotta slow down and its easier to break at low speeds while in neutral, WTF !!!!!! Unbelievable the ideas on here
