Hi All,
I'm experiencing 2 probs with my VLT:
Problem 1 (reverse gear):
- car goes into reverse gear fine when cold (first thing in the morning)
- when car is warm and I try to shift to reverse I can feel reverse gear spinning...and resisting me changing into it....ie if I apply pressure, it slows to a stop with a little crunching and pops in OK
Problem 2: fast shifting from 1st --> 2nd:
- if I try to change too quick from 1st --> 2nd it just wont go into 2nd ie loud crunch wont go into gear....if I do it normal speed, it shifts into 2nd fine with no crunching (warm OR cold...doesn't matter).....have only done this twice...not planning on doing again until prob is solved as I want to protect the box.
I've spoken to various people - and 2 theories or potential probs....
a) clutch not engaging properly (I saw a comment in a recent receipt for the car from previous owner (I only just bought it) from a workshop that the clutch slave cylinder piston might not be throwing out propery) or
b) 2nd gr synchro is rooted.
OR BOTH!!?
All other gears and shifting scenarios are find, cold, hot whatever.
Anyway - thoughts / opinions would be great appreciated.
I'm going to be under it this weekend putting my new power steering into it so am going to checkout the clutch slave cyl. while I'm there - but would appreciate comments.
I'm quite sus. on the clutch not engaging properly.... The clutch is apparently not that old and feels in good nick (engaging relatively low ie pedal close to firewall).
Im not a guru on boxes but just from exp, from 1st to 2nd i say 2 times out of on a hard change get that same noise aswell.. Like a crunch. Took it to someone and they claim synchro`s!
But i just thought to my self.. If ya cant find it! Grind it lol
jk
My 2 cents worth

Hey,
I have exactly the same problem. I am pretty sure its the syncro. You can try putting a longer piston in the slave cylinder to see if its the throw. Usually if its the clutch not engaging porperly you cantr get reverse at all hot or cold.
think lots of 5 speeds do it, ur just beating the syncros... not that bad i dont think.. most ferraris u get into and thrash will crunch 1st to 2nd

yeah ....my old datsun Z cars used to have a weak 2nd gr synchro (characteristic of the boxes) - however the combination of the reverse prob AND this is making me sus there's more to it.

hahahaha That's it

I've been grinding reverse for the last seventeen years so I wouldn't worry too much about that side of things. Mine has been doing it from new. I think it was a factory option.
Basically it teaches you never to overshoot that parking space cos it will take you five minutes to find reverse and get back to it.
You gotta remember that the syncho's job is to slow down the gears before they mate, so when you're fast shifting into second, maybe its just not getting enough time to slow it down, hence the crunch. However, reverse would be a different story... one that I'm not even gonna comment on cos I dont really know all that much about manual gearboxes & slave cylinders

'ts OK fellas - I've found the prob. I got underneath and had a good look and you WOULDN'T BELIEVE what I found.

...oh YEAH BABY!
The yoke arm is a good 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch offset from the clutch slave cylinder resulting in the piston throwing out at about a 45 degree angle!!!
Instead of fabricating a small plate and welding it to the yoke arm so the slave cylinder can engage it in a straight (or mostly straight) angle, whoever installed it must've been on some serious drugs coz they just figured that "ahh yeah - she'll be right" or something along those lines......Dodgy with a capital D. Anyway - a small plate welded to it or similar should do the trick....I'll do that in the next week or two.
RE: synchros - yeah - agree that they are intended to allow the gears to mesh under some sort of sensible shifting scenario, but normally 1st --> 2nd shifted quickly (**not** slammed) should be OK if the synchros are in good nick (my experience from zeds, GTRs, various other cars etc). Anyway - I think that the clutch issue is DEFINATELY contributing to this issue but perhaps 2nd gr synchro is tired....I'll wait till slave cyl. issue is sorted before deciding.
Tks all for your help and comments etc. I appreciate it!
reverse crunching shouldnt be a drama, lots of cars do it.. dont think reverse gear even has a syncro, i rememebr in mums suzuki vitara revers always cruched.. from brand new too
