Hi.
I've managed to snap in half the 90 degree metal piece that fits into the gearbox.
I've tried calling Holden and it's an obsolete part now and they can't get them.
I've come up against dead ends so far. I Tried a wreckers Hotline and they don;t have any. Has anyone got any ideas where I can get another one from or some other solution to the problem?
Thanks.
The one i got was actually from a VN gearbox apparently they are the same, by the way the name of the piece is a " right angled speedo drive" i got mine from Borgies Auto wreckers in Melbounrne.
I just spoke to Holden at Somerton Park here in Adelaide and they told me that from VN onwards the speedos are the electronic type - no cable. Can you confirm what the "right angled speedo drive" that you have actually is?
Can anyone vouch for what the guy at Holden's told me?
I have been looking 4 this part 4 a while aswell i went and seen holden at Chulora in sydney and they said the part is unavailable but wat i have been told is if u get a VL Automatic speedo cable and use the key way out of a automatic speedo cable aswell it goes on no worries but is a lil long.
i dunno if this works but ill be trying it soon cause i have 2 replace my whole speedo drive, cable and a keyway.
Hmm. I've got a Gregory's workshop manual for the VL here.
There is a picture from the underneath looking up at the auto trans.
I can see how the cable is a bit longer bit it looks as though it connects completely different. HYBRID_VL, when are you going to have a look at this on your car? I'm quite interested to know how you get on. I think this could make a good 'sticky' article as more people will come across this problem over time.
I have run the MX7 with the shorter manual speedo cable no drama at all.
Im now running the MX7 with the longer auto speedo cable no drama at all.
Both without this adapter, just undo the bracket holding it to the trans tunnel, screw the cable into the MX7, and re-bracket or zip tie the cable to the floor pan in a new suitable position as not to kink or cause binding in the cable itself.
Works A1, im a fussy ******* and like things done right, but this doesn't worry me at all works fine, no binding, kinking, looks almost factory bracketed in a new position too.
So there is no way im paying $250+ for an adapter which won't acheive anything.
If the MX7 genuine Manual Speedo cable is shorter again than the NA manual cable, maybe you will need the adapter, but I don't think it is shorter?

RB30_POWER - Any chance you could post a coule of pics of your gearbox setup? Mine sounds different. I will try and get some pics of mmine organized but I don't have a camera I can get at easily.
i know a few guys using the setup mick just suggested, but it wouldnt work for me, my speedo cable was rubbing on the floor and if i drove the car it would have just snapped the drive again, weird that it works fine on some cars and not others.
Anyway i finally chased up the part , the 90 degree adapter, the company to call is Turbotechnics, 02 4956 5466, speak to Lincoln and tell him what youre after, i think he keeps a few in stock now. Part is brand new and was around $150 from memory.
Cheers
ill put the pic up tomorrow guys, for interests sake atleast.
didn't get a chance today as my car was getting the air-con serviced
didn't pick it up until 5 and it was dark when i got home.

My thread broke off my speedo driver i also lost all connectors i just went and got a speedo driver and now gotta get the redt and ill be putting it all in.
the auto speedo cable duz not need the 90 degree flexi bend piece.
On Turbo and N/A manuals came with that piece as i was told by the guy at holden. N/A speedo driver has same thread and round piece inside with cut in it aswell.
but isnt as big as the Turbo Speedo driver in the MX7.
i want 2 get some info aswell cause i dont wanna go and waste money buying an auto speedo cable and keyway if it aint gunna work.
Guys, I've taken a few pics of the 90 degree part. There are shpts of it from a few different angles so hopefully it's good enough. I'm going to try and find some hosting space - I think I have some. I'll post back tomorrow when I get it sorted out. I'm a bit suprised that the people at Holden (I called two different dealers just in case I got an ignoramus at one of them that didn't know what he was talking about) and at Hust Commodore Spares here in Adelaide didn't have any idea of the workarounds that have been talked about here. Hopefully having some pics posted will help.
OK here are some pics of the part.
Some of these are big. Sorry in advance to modem users!
The bottom pic probably shows things best. The geared end goes onto the gearbox, speedo cable into the other end.
Note that this is meant to be 1 part not 2.
Can someone explain how the auto cable swap works?

boys the speedo drive costs 25 dollars at nissan its the same part number as from holden ive snapped mine in the same place where the thread is and i just bought a new one for 25 dollars from nissan
ylook4 - you don't happen to have the part number? It gets hard trying to explain to the parts guys what I'm after. Could I just call Holden and get them to give me that part number? How long ago did you buy yours and from what dealer if you don't mind sharing (just in case I don't get anywhere with the Nissan dealers Over here)?
its not meant to be one part, you have actually snappe dthe drive unit off at the thread, use an easy out or something and get the broken thread out , then just buy a new drive unit. I brought mine new from Nissan, was more like $90 though!. the NIssan part number is 32702-02G17 "pinion assembly". Thats what you need, and reuse your 90 degree adapter once you get the broken bit out. You can see the broken bit in the 2nd last pic.
Heres a pic of my new one, you can see the difference in yours.
