This might sound a bit obvious, but does brake shudder only occur via disc brakes? I have an 86 na vl and i get an annoying pulse when i hit the skids.
cheers guys.

na you can get brake shutter from drum brakes too. It all has to do with the runout on either the drums or the discs. I recommend machining your drums
good luck
oh ok, cool i didnt know that. It is coming up through the steering wheel tho so i was thinking it was the discs primarily (hence the obviousness) thanks for the reply tho paco.
if ur going to machine ur drums , get new shoes aswell.
though if its vibrating thru ur steer coloum , then in normally indicates that either the wheels are well unbalanced , front disks too thin or ur pads are rooted and bind instead of brake.

the brake shutter has nothing to do with the tires out of balance, you will get a bad shimmy if your tires are out of balance wether your braking or not.
the shimmy when braking is due the rotor or drums having excessive runout, not a true surface all the way around. This happens over time from everyday braking, and if you drive hard and brake hard it is usually worse due to the rotor or drums getting extremely hot, as we know metal warps as it heats up, this then causing the runout on the rotor. if you do machine the rotors or drums i do recommend changing the pads or shoes as well this way you have a true surface between the pad or shoe and the rotor or drum.
if you do have a shimmy while braking is does mean that your rotors or drums are too thin, dont get sucked into this measure them or yourself, go to the store and buy yourself a cheap micrometer, this will save you hundreds as quite often the mechanic will tell you they are too thin just to make more dollars. I know this because i am an ex mechanic myself at at Chevrolet dealer in the States. The more **** they can sell you the more money they make. understandable right?
good luck just remember the more you can do the more money you will save, even if it is just measuring the rotors
Thought I bump a old thread. My girlfriend owns a Ford BA XR6 ute. Yes I know a ford. But anyway. What would cause brake shudder at 80km/hr only. We would be traveling along a 100km/hr road & when we brake it allways shudders at 80 km/hr. Does anybody know what we can do to fix it. Thanks

Mate rotors would have hotspots and they won't machine out replace the rotors with something like Dba slotted rotors and that should fix it..
