Ive got a brand new (900km's) old yarra valley jatco 4 speed behind my turbo motor and i recently cooked the tranny fluid a bit due to ****ty placement of the tranny cooler.
Now the transmission holds first to about 50 km/h and will not shift into second until then at all no matter if i have my foot on the accel or not. It goes into second and then into third at about 70/80 km's and then wont engage overdrive till about 100ish.
I drained some of the fluid out and it was a darkish smelly red, so i replaced it with new ****.
The dipstick says its "full" but i dont know if its overfull or if its a bit empty.
What would be causing it to hold onto the gears so long?

Maybe the clutches are worn or damaged.
Can you manually shift the auto?.
Transman has been more than helpful to me in the past and is well worth talking to.

take it back to YVA or ring them!!!!!

yeah it shifts into second no probs if i do it myself, but holds to like 50 km/h if i leave it in D.
the shifts from second to third seem fine too, but third to o/d hold out to at least 100 km/h.

take it back to yarra and get a drain and refill of fluid. sounds like u maybe have too much or too little fluid in ur box.. wont cost u **** all and will prolly fix it. or they can do somethin else. but better to be safe than sorry. specially on a new box.

definately take it back, sounds like they have modified the valve body and perhaps not done it correctly, the car should definately change to 2nd gear under light throttle a lot earlier than 50 km/h.

today was the first time i had for the last week and a bit to actualy have a decent look at the car in its entirity.
I fixed a manifold leak and then could still hear another one, but it was coming from somewhere underneath the car.
The vacuum line to the auto had a split in the rubber part just as it enters the box, and the tranny fluid was low.
Replaced the rubber elbow and topped up the fluid and it was fine.
Ive never owned an auto car before and was checking the fluid in neutral and it was fine, checked it in drive (didnt know you had to) and it was low.
Car and auto run fine now.

the correct way to check the auto fluid is idling in park.
if you've just topped it up, put your foot on the brake and move the gear selector down to 1st and back up to park, pausing for 1-2 seconds on each selection. this is to make sure the oil goes everywhere in the valve body and trans.
then while idling in park on some straight ground, the level should be about half way up the dipstick's level indicator when cold, and around the full mark when completely warmed up.

shouldnt you check it at operating temp too

12-04-04, 01:03 GMT+10#11 i was told that by a trans guy (half way when cold) but i think the key is, check it idling in park and it should be full or less.. not over!! over is bad too.

12-04-04, 12:28 GMT+10#13 get a length of hose, put one end to your ear and run over the manifolds or anywhere else with the other end. you can hear it start to suck
or drop some water over little areas in the manifold or whereever and if it starts to idle funny, you know its sucked in some water and there is a leak there too.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

03-06-04, 02:20 GMT+10#16 Shifting manually (1-2) overrides the automatic system. When you select drive the automatic system takes over. Late full boost shifts generally occur over 16psi of boost. email me at [email removed] and I can advise on possible solutions.

03-06-04, 04:07 GMT+10#17 i had a simular problem, you might want to check that the knock down/drop back sensor on the trans, i had mine replaced coz it was leaking, got it replaced and the pin in it was pushing on a throttle sensor or something, and the gearbox didnt know what it was doing. I took it back and they replaced it with the proper one, and now it works better, but my trans changes gears lazy now hey, it doesnt change hard, its slow and revs then changes ... wierd .... so yeah ... maybe get them to check that out
