Hey people,
I've got a bit of a shudder in my VL when I'm over about 90kph - it gradually gets worse the faster you get. I've replaced my brake pads, and the mechanic said the discs were fine, I've replaced/balanced/aligned both front tyres, and the only other thing I can think of is the bearings, but I've been told that they can't cause your car to shudder. I'm thinkin bearings because I drove thru some water a lil while ago - but the shudder was there before, so I have NFI what it may be. Any ideas?
Thanks,
-David
your wheel bearings will have a dust cover on them so don't worry about the water theory, is this car an auto? if yes, then there are threads up that explain how to disable your overdrive as the torque convertor is causing the vibration (or something like that), I wouldn't know as I have a 3 speed auto and not a 4 speed!!!!!
I thought about that but the car does it when crusin down a hill in neutral - and it mainly vibrates the steering wheel. I had the box serviced not long ago and the guy said it looked all fine. Suspension maybe?
a constant shudder at a certain speed suggests it coming from a rotating body, such as wheels/tyres, tailshaft(s) that sort of thing, suspension - I doubt it.
It's in the front end even when in neutral so it cant be drivetrain related (can it?) and it only does it on some days i.e. worse on some days than others. It's got me buggered.
if it is squaling then repack bearings or replace, if that fails then
get the tyres balanced again, many place can and do make mistakes in simple jobs, take it somewhere else
It could be your discs, get them to check the runout, and its too high either machine them back or get new ones. And rotate each wheel on the studs to find the smallest runout too.
Works a treat and is cheap.
even better if you got your own dial gauge
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
i would cut it down to three things, wheels are out of balance( maybe a wheel weight has fallen off), u-joint on the driveshaft, or wheel bearings (make sure if you replace the wheel bearings, replace the races as well)
good luck

your right in what your saying, but you shouldnt get shutter, unless you are applying the brakes,, one wouldnt think the runout on the rotors would be that extreme. But then again, crazier **** has happened i guess

if u have a shudder when driving above 80 kmh and the steering wheel shakes, i means that your disc are screwed and need maching, if it does it when you apply ther brake also i means the same thing,.

being an ex mechanic myself, only a handleful of times have i had a shutter happen in the steering wheel, due to high runout of the rotors ,when not braking. Its usually due to tire imbalance or driveshaft, or torque converter.
just had to clarify that
Well I had a good look-see yesterday, and there is a lot of play in the bearings. I'm gonna repack them next weekend, and see how that goes, if that fails I'll replace them. Thanks for your replies guys.

yeah I just guessed that it was about braking. I just read the topic

i had a similar prob on my vl, took it to kmart tyre/auto place for balance and alignment and it did nothing, took it back for a 'fine' tune, still did nothing. Took it down the road to another place and for roughly the same price ( about $45) fixed it perfect the first time. aparently they have a touchy front end, thats wat the guy a kmart said. he was also a ****head
Ive got a really ferral wheel bearing noise comming from the front. It gets worse when i turn a smooth corner right. It starts to resonate the sound between 40-50km/h.
You should get the wheel bearings redone anyway, it sonly about 40 dollars + grease and a gregories or similar manual has enough technical on how to do it yourself!
