My gearbox is making a bit of noise. When its running with the cluch pressed there isn't any noise. When I let the cluch out in Neutral its makes the god awful 'growl'. I was told by a mate its the Cluch Throw Out Bearing. I did a search and couldn't really find anything on this.
I called a 2 places here in Brizzy and the prices they gave me were around $300. Can I do this as a try-hard backyard mechanic or is really something a 'professional' should handle?
yeah sounds about right if its like a constant whining, grinding, or whizzing sound. My gemmy had the same thing, never got it fixed.
Also search for thrust or centre bearing.
If you are confident in getting under the car and dropping the tailshaft, gearbox etc off you should be ok. just get a manual and take your time.
Throwout bearing should only make noise when the clutch is pressed. Could be the spigot bush? Like when the clutch is engaged, the plates aren't aligned and the clutch is trying to swing the gearbox input shaft around in circles.
But come to think of it, its more likely the front bearing in the box.
