Any car can benefit from a Cold Air Induction. Cold air benifits your car by improving the temperature of the incoming air. It's very simple and should only cost about $30-40. Parts are available from most hardware and plumbing shops.
The first step is to get the parts,
1: About 500mm of PVC piping. Usually 100mm or 90mm in diameter.
2: 2 x 45deg bends.(PVC)
3: 2 x angle brackets (metal) look at the pics
4: Nuts and bolts (preferably with nylon locknuts)
5: PVC glue.
6: To make the most of this mod a good quality panel filter should be used.
7: 100mm x 40mm metal plate.
8: silicone
9: rivets
Step 1.
The first step is to mark where the whole is going to go through the gaurd. The easiest way to do this is to cut the whole in the bottom of your airbox. Then mount the airbox into original position and trace around whole onto the gaurd.
Step 2
Cutting the whole is hardest part of this job. The easiest way is with a whole saw, But you will probably kill the blade so a cheap one will do. Or you can use a jigsaw or plasma cutter. Drilling small holes around the diameter of the whole and cutting with a hacksaw blade will also work.
Step 3
Cut PVC piping to the required length. 300mm from front of car to first 45deg bend. another 45deg bend and 60mm up into airbox.
Step 4
Glue all pieces together and position onto car. PVC pipe should protrude about 30mm into airbox.A bellmouth can be glued onto the end when finished.
Step 5
Angle brackets are used to hold pipe firmly into place. Bolts should be nylon locknuts to prevent nuts coming loose and getting lost.
Step 6
Other end of piping is held in with zipties or brackets can be made up.
Step 7
Painting the pipe can be done using any colour, although matt black can't be seen from underneath as easy as any other colour.
Step 8
The original snorkel on the front of the air box should be blocked off using a thin piece of tin plate. Seal with silicone and pop rivet into place.
Step 9
Install panel filter and away you go. This shot proves how it works.
Ends like this can be fitted to gather more air into pipe
I do not take any resposibility for any legal concerns with this modification.

thats not bad but how about this, use a pod filter and box it in with sheet metal around the pod and use the air pipe like you have described, i think it would work a bit better, just my 2 cents...

Only problem i could see is that you can be defected with POD's and this method would be cheaper and just as beneficial.

not to mention a pod with a heap of heat stuff around it looks like ****
You could put the pod inside of an airbox type thing? With cold air going inside that airbox.
Just do it the way coastvl has it I reckon, if your going to change anything change the intake or how it finishes into the box. I'm going to try a few things differently, when I get around to it.

i did what coastvl did but used a large 15cm-10cm pvc adapter piece as a bellmouth on the end of mine. if people are worried about the filter, get a k+n panel filter instead of a pod, it will look stock and be just as effective.

I did this about 3 years ago and some of the things mentioned above are on the list of things to do. I'm just to lazy.
And one other thing that everybody worries about is water getting in. I can tell you, I have never had a problem with the pipe being in this position.
I have been on a dyno against other N/A's with less k's than mine, and with extractors fitted and beat them all. I have extractors fitted now so it will be interesting to see the difference. The benefits are minimal but every little bit helps.

What were the dyno results?
I'm planning on doing mine, but having a removable piece that I can take off during wet days. If I can that is.

It's not great ,but 345,000k's it's not too bad.

Not bad, I take it thats stock with cai and exhaust, no extractors.. No timing changes etc?
I'll be interested to see if I get an improvement, yet I have to find a place around here that does dyno runs for cheap.

10-05-04, 11:31 GMT+10#14 used 90mm pvc wit 100m adapter on the front w/k+n panel, works gr8!
i found if you leave the snorkel there it gets more air at low end but wen driving 80 or above and around the top of any gear it goes better with the snorkel out and a cover over the hole, the snorkel seems to disturb the flow therefore you get more momentum in air flow without it.
gr8 mod coastvl, explained well too

04-06-04, 14:49 GMT+10#15 1st of all, awesome guide...i was looking into doing this before, but was a little unsure how to go about it...now its all clear...one things holding me back though... cutting the hole through the guard...i just want to know what would have to be done if the police busted u with this mod? im not concerned about replacing the airbox...just how to fix the hole ... thanks

04-06-04, 17:06 GMT+10#16 Keep the part you cut out and seal it back in I guess, its pretty hard to notice it if you paint the PVC black and you keep the intake snorkel on. You can still block it off if you want just keep the snorkel there, I left mine there in case the PVC got blocked up somehow very unlikely but I really don't want to choke my engine.

27-06-04, 11:59 GMT+10#19 Just did the cold air intake yesterday with a K&N air filter. The car seems to run a little smoother and responds a little better . Recomend doing the mod ,heck it only cost a cple of bucks.
