Hi guys, I have 4.11's in my Commodore - however it's starting to annoy me because everytime someone wants to run me - I lose! This is simply because I can't get traction. I'm wondering, if I lessen the gear ratio to something like 3.45's or 3.9's - would this help? I know that with my 4.11's, if I don't plant my foot - the wheels won't spin as much (but I get a slow take off), but will a different gear ratio allow me to plant my foot, get better take off because of less wheel spin?? If this is the case - does anybody wanna swap me their 3.9's for my 4.11's? How much would I be looking at to put in 3.9's? And how much could I sell my 4.11's for?? I'm starting to think that the only thing 4.11's are good for, are for take-off's BUT ONLY if you've got slicks. Which is never, unless I'm on the strip. My current wheels are 8.5" wide, and I've got brand new Bridgestone rubber on them. Any thoughts would be great. Cheers! - Dave.

play with it untill you figure out how to stop the wheel spins, don't plant on take off, just ease it in, wait a few secs till you get good traction and then push it. And before taking off "warm" your tires up a bit to help your traction. edit: or get a set of 15's and leave them a little flat at the back... your 'larger' rims wouldn't be helping you in the traction side of things. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Can't you get some form of traction control fitted mate, I think the requirement is ABS brakes as you require sensors at the wheels. There should be something around allowing the Delco to run traction control. Thats if you are still running the standard computer cause then you could keep your high gears.

Go for a softer compound tyre or better shocks all round. You will always compromise one for the other. Handling or drags, You just have to play with it untill you find the happiest point for take-off.

Nahh - not running the standard computer. I looked into installing the traction control, but it's not a cheap option. I've also got a Turbo350 (3spd auto) in the car if that helps. And steve - thanks for ya idea's mate. I can control the accelerator pedal to where it does not spin - but the car just doesn't fly on take off then. Maybe it's a case of win/lose situation. At $500 a tyre - I won't be "warming" them up for very long at all that's for sure. lol! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

the diff ratio multiplies trq. taller gears will make it easier to take off without spin, some cars will go slower - some faster, lots of variables, I would suggest a bigger jump than to 3.9's though. makes a huge difference to wheelspin in my car, but accelleration isnt a lot different

Dave, I'm guessing you have IRS?? If so is the camber set up correctly?? A mate of mine had a VTSS lowered heaps with 19's and the thing wouldn't hook up anywhere!! It was because not enough tyre was on the ground. He ended up getting a K-MAC camber correction kit which made a huge difference to traction and tyre wear. Just my 2c......

A mate had an XF years ago with a 9", 460HP clevo and a manual C4 3200 stall, we tried 4 different ratios in that from 3.25 - 4.11. we settled on 3.55 in the end, still had traction issues but way better. and didnt rev its nuts off on the hiway.

HSVSUX, how much approx will it cost me to put in another gear ratio to see how that goes? Is it just a matter of changing the 'cogs' or whatever? And is it a labour intensive task??? I.E. - will it take a while thus costing me more due to the labour? If it's an in-expensive thing to do a swap over, I might just do the 'trial and error' think you did with you mate and his XF. However, I'm sure you did most of the work yourself, so it probably wouldn't have cost you as much as it's gonna cost me... Thanks.

Well, me and my Bro used to set up the odd diff (after a diff shop shagged a diff of mine up) but I use a new diff shop now and the guy charges me $150 cash all up for any ratio change for B/W or 9" as long as hes got a 2nd hand ratio that I want. he has heaps and heaps of mint 2nd hand gears. he just fitted 3.23 gears to my car. out of interest hes got (to suit the B/W) 2.7, 3.08, 3.23, 3.45, 3.7, 3.89, 3.91, 4.11 all are $150 change over except the 3.7's they were new and that was $450.
