I was speaking to Jimmy, and he seems to think that running auto trans fluid as gearbox oil in your 5spd mx7 box is really good for shifts.
How is it like for durability and the like?
What kind of gearbox oil do you guys recommend, im running a shell one at the moment but ide like something that shifts easier.

I would reccomend you use a full auto trans fluid in your box, I use to in my BT1 and never had any dramas.
Shift's smooth, or if you want you can go 1/2 gearbox and 1/2 auto trans fluid.
cheers

Surely if you are having trouble the gearbox is root???
Nah - the MX7 (in fact many Nissan boxes) are known for being a little notchy. Running plain VMX80 will make the MX7 box notchy - especially on 3rd to 4th shifts when the oil warms up - fine when it's cold.
Running a mix of auto trans fluid makes the box much nicer to shift at operating temperature... no noticeable degradation in lifespan - mine has been running it for years & years.
So it's perfectly ok on ur gearbox to use an auto transmission fluid instead of gearbox oil?
MY VLT has done 165k, driven by an old man for the past 160k when i shift into 3rd sometimes it doesnt shift like it should, i need to do an oil change on motor, gearbox and diff, so i might as well do it all at once.
700hp said: 25% dex II
EXPIG said: full trans oil
Last thing i want to do is root my gearbox as i'm currently saving like mad for FMIC & 3in zorst.

...well, try the 25% first. Increase the percentage if 25% makes no difference to your shifts.
Personally, I'd not use 100% dextron - but if EXPIG swears by it, and has done a stack of kays with it like that - then maybe it's not as bad as it sounds?
Try 25% - you'll not be sorry.
Ill try the 25% mix just to see how it goes, might even do 50-50.
It shifts ok, but i get a bit of whine in 1-2-3 thats comming from the box, and the mx7 doesnt like to be slammed hard either.
Soarer r154a you can chirp it in 3rd with out even trying, its that good a shifter. Notchy at low speeds, but when your going through the gears at lightning speed - its great.
Redline gearbox oil is awesome
90% of race cars I know use it.

I would recommend the "shockproof" lightweight gear oil.
eliminates metal to metal contact on those big shifts.
Im using Penrite Extra Light 75W/90 in my box...
Semi Synth oil and makes shifts smooth as ya **** ******

I was speaking to an oil guru, and he was saying that the main reason why people put auto fluid with normal gearbox oil is to thin it down a bit, hence why it shifts better.
He said that thats what they did in the old days when they didnt have a wide range of viscosities.
dceptv, i might try your oil, if i cbf getting the car back on the road anytime soon

Ok guys started my car tonite, didnt drive it, but the noise has been cut by atleast 1/2, by the time i have engine noise and road noise it wont be able to be heard at all now, im happy as!!!!!!
Ill drive it tomorrow and tell you how i go!
