Hi, My VL has 30degree + ignition timing to it practically all the way the distributor goes, 2.5 exhaust + gutted cat, k@n panel filter, and the car does not ping apart from a misfire every now and then at idle. could the camshaft be retarded. It also does 0-100km/h in 10.5sec (which is bloody slow meaured on a 36degree day). Also one welsh plug is rooted and the trans cooler lines are leaking near the radiator. When taking off it has a kind of a flatspot till about 35-40 km/h. any ideas or is this normal (bloody hope not)?

i take it your car is an auto? mine has this flatspot as well, so does pretty much every n/a auto i've ever been in. it's just a power band thing, wouldn't worry about it.

the stock timing is 15 degrees, but apparently 20 is better, especially if your running pulp.

if your ignition timing is that far advanced and it runs ok then the cam timing is retarted. that would explain the big flat spot until around 40. my old n/a auto was like that too until i fixed the cam timing.

You have to take off the timing belt, crank the engine to tdc(the distributor rotor will be pointing to cylinder 1) and then put belt back on making sure there is 53 teeth on the belt between the crankshaft and the cam shaft. Get a gregories workshop manual and it will show you.

no that is wrong. don't do that. you have to have it at tdc first. then take the timing belt off. might as well get a new one for ~$25. get a gregories manual. it will tell you how to do it in more detail.

he means crank it over by hand mate. if its a stocker though, the valves wont hit the pistons. i had a tensioner snap on me,.. thought it was ****ed for sure, then i realized that there is plenty of clearance due to reliefs in the pistons. -jimmy
