i chnged the engines 86 to an 88 should i use the 86 computer or the 88 computer? i also was running the 86 computer with the ati 88 computer under the steering colum it made a real bad smell! i think i nearly burnt her out so i swapped back to the 86 ati and it was fine i was told to leve it like this by my mechanic but it is so sluggish do i change to both the 88's? ( the ati 88 is still ok)

If you have swapped engines, use the computer that originally came with your new engine.

so ur trying to say that the Auto computers, ATI from 86-88 r different? if this is true it might explain why im not getting overdrive and no kickdown but i hav changed them over before, one was a 86 and one was a 87. no difference.

87vl, If your gearbox is not kicking into overdrive after 80km/hr then the gearbox is rooted. Does it slip when it trys to jump to 4th gear ? Mine use to do it but I just drove it with 3 speed and it use to rev its tits out! It gave more power = but more fuel I did a gearbox swap with my mechanic mate on the floor, never again it was a nightmare as you always lying on the ground taking over 4 hours and not to mention if you didnt have the right tools makes it more difficult. Just buy another gearbox wack it in your boot and then drive to a tranny workshop and ask them how much to swap my box. I got mine done for $50 and it took less than 1 hour, that was a bargain ! I was wrapped Gearbox different: VLT auto ecu AT2 (turbo gearbox ECU) VL NA Auto AT1 (non turbo) I was told it controls the overdrive mainly and thats all. I am running the non-turbo in my turbo box no difference !!! My mate had it disconnected the Auto ECU AT1 as he only wanted 3 speed for his awesome machine. His sick hybrid toranna/VLT engine achieved 12.2sec with most minor mods. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

An auto computer will run both a manual providing you use a turbo computer in a turbo and an N/a unit in an N/A and an auto. Year model doesn't really matter,of course you can run a turbo computer on an N/A motor if you use RB30ET injectors,I ran my hybrid engine with an RB20DET computer as the RB25DE one was stuffed, the only things that didn't work was the idle (idled too fast) as the RB20's use an idle switch like the RB30E's do (the RB25's use a variable resistor, like the VL autos TVS) and it didn't run the VVT solenoid, the injectors & AFM on an RB20DET are the same on an RB25DE so this meant I could use the RB20DET unit. I have heard of someone using an RB20DET unit on an RB30DET hybrid motor.
