im not sure what its exaclty called but its right beside the centerbearing...anyway i was wondering if that could be causeing my car to shudder like you wouldnt beleive, in 1st its alright but by the time you get into 3rd the car is un drivable... any ideas?
my vl does the same dude, but only a little bit (hardly noticeable) get a pedders sfc safety check thats what i did, $1400 later and my car now runs like a dream.
yep, it's the Constant Velocity (CV) joint, it's round with a rubber boot towards the front of the car and held to the rear tailshaft with some big ass allen bolts. Check to see whether ALL the bolts are nice and tight, it could be as simple as that, and that the 2 bolts that hold the carirer are also tight.
@ impreza - $1400 to fix - SHIET!!!!
aren't CV joints only present on front wheel drive cars? ITSGMH are you talking about the centre bearing in the tailshaft? cause that's not a CV joint....... it's a bearing.
JMB2102: it could be your uni joints in your tailshaft, but if it's a steadily increasing vibration then it may also be that your tailshaft is unbalanced. take it out and get it to a mechanic or someone who can balance it for ya.
oh and impreza: i hope you learned your lesson, pedders are rip artists! i replaced both my tailshaft uni joints for $64, took me roughly 2 hours.......no shake in my driveline at all now.

dude, yes, there is a bearing in the centre, there is also a CV joint that joins the 2 shafts together!!!!
inside the bearing? now i think i know what you're referring to.....but i still wouldn't call it a CV joint. dammit, who cares what it's called, i get you now
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
CV,
Constant Velocity Joint.
It is exactly that!
I don't know why people think a CV Joint is something that only occurs in a FWD vehicle.
The CV Joint is used in many places, not just on cars.
Might provide some more insight,

Its funny i know a guy who went into the car place and asked for a replacment CV joint for the tailshaft, they guy said only FWD vehicles have them, your skyline doesn't have them.
What a ****wit, with no ****en idea!

EDIT: Extra link added
ok here we go
a universal joint can only be used when the two shafts it is connecting are in a straight line otherwise the bigger the nagle the greater the vibration - (the shaft with pick up speed and drop speed rapidly)
a CV (constantly velocity) joint is then used when the two shafts are angled to each other. ie fwd driveshafts to hub, RWD with irs (not live beam rear axle) and in the centre of a two piece drive shaft (connects to the centre bearing) LIKE WHAT THE VLS HAVE!
so the vl actually off memory has 2 universal and one cv joints in the tail shaft!
