I was originaly thinking of putting a rb20 in my car but now I'm seriously thinking about just putting a supercharger on the rb30. I was originaly thinking of the rb20 because I've got a blown head gasket or a cracked head and was thinking a rb20 would be a easy solution. I've now got a complete top end off another VL and now I'm thinking I can use these parts and put a supercharger on. I'm after bang for my buck and think I'll be better off with a supercharged VL.

yeah youll probably get away with it cheaper with the supercharger... and you know u dont want no gay ass rb20 in no VL!.. but what ive been meaning to ask bro.. is why havent you fixed the head gasket/ head..? whichever it may be.. its been a while now champ... tisnt a hard job... anyways homie.. best of luck!

Well I haven't fixed it because I was saving for a rb20. Then I spent all that money on getting drunk so I bought a replacement head to fix it and was gonna stay n/a. Then I got given the Ford and the Rb20 idea was gonna get done when the Ford was sold and now I'm thinking about supercharging it. No matter what happens I'll have boost.

meh go a cheap ass RB20, get a bigger turbo and management and you're cookin with fire. My 300hp@wheels isnt too bad for a "piss weak RB20"

300hp at 6000 rpm, that's not bad i guess. while you spool up, i'll go get a cup of coffee, call my girlfriend and then get to 70 km/h with my $300 blower setup, if that's okay with you? p.s. IJD get a blower! then you can cruise with me n my hard ass pipe-hittin niggaz in brisvegas!

I'll end up getting a supercharger. I'm a student on a limited budget and now can't afford the conversion. If I was to get a rb20 it'd be an automatic with a near stock exhaust. If I get a supercharger I can get extractors, sports exhaust, 5 speed and ported throttle body and manifold.

RB20's aren't gay. sure it wont be good for top speed, but for accel its not as bad as you think, its because all these commo boys forget about changing the final drive ratio. thats why their results are ****. 400hp from an RB20 is much easier than 400 hp from an RB30, and you wont even have to crack open the engine, forged internals from the factory. i will admit that they are getting kinda old now though. and you cant say they came from a lighter car, because they didnt, the skyline is just as heavy as a commo. just my opinion. oh, and btw ijd, you can pick up and RB20 manual engine pacakge for around 1500, hows that for a bargain?? -jimmy

I would stick with an RB30 simply for longetivity and its bottom end torque, you can get a bit of power out of an RB20DET and drop the VL's diff ratio but how long would these motors last if they are putting out good horsepower? I know with my engine it was pretty quick up on the top RPM range but still being an RB30 means I still have very good bottom end to midrange torque due to its higher compression ratio and higher flowing head but I don't want to have to be rebuilding the engine every 100,000 kms because the revs are what kill a motor if you do it all the time. Supercharging is a good way to go as it will give the motor heaps more torque down low, turbocharging is also good as I have heard you get better engine life out of a turbo motor than an equivalent sized high revving NA motor which puts out the same sort of power. I have heard of people getting fairly high kms of of their RB25DET powered Skylines (i.e. 300,000 kms and still going) because they are driven normally most of the time and they are still putting out standard horsepower,I couldn't see a 300 HP RB20DET @ 6000 RPM lasting that long.

yeah, but you can't exactly expect a supercharged rb30e to keep on keeping on - especially if you want to raise the boost.. its 3psi, you'll want to accomodate the needs of fuel, more boost, and pistons before too long. im not against the idea i wanted to do it myself a while back, im just giving some opinions Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

bextor is right, if you're after more than around 150 flywheel kilowatts, forget supercharging because it will end up being more expensive in the long run, as you will have to upgrade gearbox, decompression plate, fuel system, diff, brakes etc. but if you're after a cheap, easy solution to make your car a fair bit more fun to drive, then blowing is the way to go. i'm only aiming for a streetable car that will keep up with clubsports and their ilk, so i may feel better about myself for owning a 15 year old car that is as good as a rich man's 5ltr V8.

I was just thinking about the torque that the supercharged rb30 will produce. One of the reasons i'm not going turbo rb30 is cos of the torque. I don't have enough for a MX7. The supercharged rb30 would produce more torque than turbo rb30 so how would the gearbox hold up?

hey man, you're up late! the manuals have all held up okay (stromy, kaBOOMn, john001) so far with heavy duty clutches. i, however, will be running an n/a auto, so i guess i'll find out! will be employing the services of a large transmission cooler though, heat is the big killer of auto boxes.

Well if the gearboxes are holding up with heavy duty cluches then i shud be right. I'll keep a stock cluch cos i'd rather a slipping clutch than a blown box. Is anyone with a supercharged motor running a intercooler?

stromy was looking into it, last i heard. not sure if he fitted it. with the small amount of boost the SC14 makes it would be a hindrance though, creating unnecessary lag. if you took the boost right up to 10 psi or so it may be worthwhile, but your blower may not last long!

yeah, the more boost you chuck through the blower the more heat/ work load its gonna have to spit out so its not going to last as long. but at 250-300 a pop you can't really complain. can you? of course im right . you can pick up an mx7 for 1500.. if you find the right spots. i've got one in my car now and i dunno, if things keep shtting me ill be selling it for what i got it for. which is around 1500. supercharged would be damn fun.. i've gotta admit that, taking off with speed through, first, second, and a bit through third would be great fun. thats up to around 120 until you start running into inefficiency.. from what i hear. its really up to you, if you want the stab/ spinning effect of a blower, or the rb20et then..we're not the ones to make the final decision. talk to people that have owned a rb20 and talk to the people that have owned the blower.. your decision Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

if it were me i would save up and either convert ur RB30 or build it into a RB30ET like i am, although it might be cheaper to supercharge it, u prob wont look back, and u hav to remember centrifigul superchargers use half the engines horspower to gain another half, turbos dont. Although turbos can be less reliable and need a lot more expensive components to reep their full potential superchargers dont. The balls in ur court. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

first of all, let me clarify for you that this is a roots type blower, not a centrifugal. a centrifugal blower is a lot more like a turbo, usually takes a while to "spool up" before producing boost. they are more efficient but more expensive. secondly, even my roots-type blower would not take half the engine's horsepower, it's more like 10-15%, while the gains are in excess of 30%, with marked increases in low and mid-range torque.
