just wondering, if i knew i was going to be idling for a period of time, would i be better off, fuel consumption wise, turning the engine off and restarting it when i was good to go again?
what sort of time frame would i have to be sitting there for this to be worth while?
and as for the downsides, engine has to re-lubricate itself again, battery would die quicker..................any other??
cheers
temperature wise it better to turn the engine off cause the nissan 6 gets very hot woth no air running through it and it takes a while to cool it back down so i usually turn mine off if its any more than a few minutes idle. you dont want to be up for a warped head.
That might be true with a 2 core radiator but my old radiator was a 3 core and i just put a recored 3 core in there and mines fine, but i haven't been stuck in trafic on a 30degree + day so it may be wise to do it on a hot summer day.
I used to be a pizza delivery driver and on a delivery I'd just leave my engine idling(take keys out and lock it) cos the constant starting killed my starter motor.
A few minutes idling aint gonna make much difference to your fuel consumption.
if your engine overheats from sitting then fix the problem, they werent designed to do that.
my n/a only gets to the 2nd notch on the guage even on a 39 degree day in traffic. if i go up a hill and rev it hard and then the clutch fan disengages, it gets almost to half but goes down once i let the revs down again (straighten up). however once you get a bit past half, the clutch fan should physically lock so it'll be on no matter what revs.
also because the fan disengages at high revs and is engaged at low revs, idling should bring the temp down, if all is working well. example - i went up a hill on a 35 degree day (a/c on etc) and it went a bit over the 2nd notch. after sitting for a while because of a crash further up, i was down to half way between the 1st and 2nd notch again.
i have a 3 core radiator btw.
what do the vls come standard with, i always thought they were 2 cores. Mines completely corroded too so that may be the problem anyway what should i look at replacing it with.
