After having a gander at my new exhaust up on the hoist and I noticed a slight oil leak from the diff, it looks like it's just the gasket. do I undo the loswer bolts first and drain the fluid, then replace the gasket and fluid, or is there something else I have to do? cheerz morepsi

Yes thats it, put a little silastic on both sides of the gasket though as it will weep (Belive me i hate silastic too!)

Just get a new gasket, there only about $3, also goto GMH and buy a replacement filler bung, there about $3.50, Then 1.7l of oil to suit(depends on what diff) and you have a sweet deal!!!!!!

Who stocks these gaskets? Holden? repco? I'll find the right oil, shouldn't be a drama, it's ya standard VLT LSD. So New Bung New Gasket Oil jobs done.

stick with the silastic, gaskets can shrink during times where car is not in use ...

Use a gasket and RTV Silicon (i use the loctite blue stuff) while replacing the new bung. Only bad thing about replacing the oil is you have to take the rear housing off - but i guess thats OK if your changing the whole lot as above. You might want to put some RTV Silicon on the bottom outer as well when everything is bolted up and cleaned, as hte gasket will absorb oil over time and then it might weep.

Or just use plain ultra blue,on the newer Commodores with IRS that's all they use, just make sure it is applied around the inner side of the bolt holes to prevent leaks.

Yer thats fine on a surface joint, where two machined surfaces fit together quite tightly, but were talking old metal plate verses cast housing!!! Like on your gearbox, no gaskets need to be used there!
