hey guys, what causes the revs to flare out when you downshift in an auto (planting your foot) from 3rd to second? loose bands? badly worn clutch packs?
cause lately mine has been doing it pretty bad, you punch it at 60 and revs flare right to 4000 (from 2000) then it bites and grabs second, coming back down to about 3000. any help is appreciated.
my old one did that and it was stuffed!
basically as all the parts in the trans wear, especially the seals, it'll loose line pressure and cause the flare.
most only do it a little bit and it just makes the shift a bit sloppier than normal. my old one was as bad as you described - planting it at 60+ it'd rev up to 5000 and then grab the gear.
try a new vacuum modulator and a service (including band adjustments) and it may help but if its flaring that much it sounds like its rebuild time.
smcs,
from memory your trans is stock so this fix should work.
jatco slowed down the 3-2 down shift by restricting the oil flow to 2nd (band) apply and release.
check 2nd band adjust, nip it up and back it off 1 & 3/4 turns. the factory manual suggests 3. way too big a gap causes a time delay for oil to fill the hole.
if it is still unhappy then drilling larger holes in the valve body will speed up 2nd apply and release. these mods should aleviate symptoms however-
as the others have said- its probably time for a new trans
cheers lads, i'm organising a 5 speed conversion anyways, should be in in a month or so with any luck. will try and fix the auto before then though, when the shift kit gets here i'll have to take the pan off again anyway i think, so will be able to fix up the band adjustment then.
