hey guys, it started yesterday, driving home from a mates place and the low coolant light came on, i babied her home and checked everything but the coolant isnt low. took it for another easy drive round the block and it didnt come on. driving home from work tonight and it came back on and the temp seems a little higher than normal. just wondering if ne one can help me or if i really need to take it tomorrow to a radiator place. jezz

I can't remember which way around it is - but if you have an auto radiator in a manual or vice versa, it makes the low coolant light go funny because of the gearbox cooler inside. Thats what happened to a mates car anyway.

So your car is auto yes? and the standard tranny cooler is hooked up?

I had this problem about a month ago. What it was: I had a TINY leak from the welsh plug at the rear of the engine, because of this slight leak air was getting into the coolant and when an air bubble hits the low coolant probe the light goes on because it thinks you are low on coolant. Get it fixed ASAP as air bubbles in your cooling system is BAD...

I'm not saying you have the same problem as me BUT it sounds like you have a leak somewhere... If it is a leak it could cost you as little as a couple of $$$ up to hundreads it all depends. Good luck!!

chek the wire from the radiator all the way back through the loom dude. My bros car low coolant light comes on sometimes, its very erratic. mite not come on for a week, then it'll come on 3 times in 1 day the next week. Chek the coolant and everytime it is perfect. So i've put it down to dogey electricals. Dont stress too much over it, I doubt its serious. Ollie

I had the same problem a while ago. It was the sensor plug, got a new plug & it was fine after that. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

is this plug that your talking about on the passenger side of the radiator? just a little thing?? im thinking (hoping) exchaser is right and is just and electrical thing coz its no constant or anything it will come on for a minute or two then go off. but im still gonna get the welsh plug fixed as spiritfc suggested. jezz

actually i had this same problem, what mine was, is theres air locks in the radatior/cooling system. There's one coolant sensor in the side of the radiator and one in the plenum. When the fluid circulates and the air locks pass by it reads no coolant. Next time the coolant light comes on try stabbing it and hold into it for a few seconds and see if it goes off as this will force the fluid to move on. If it does go off you have an air lock. To fix the air lock take off the radiator cap and undo the screw ontop of the plenum thats has a "never open when hot" sticker next to it. There should be two but just do the one thats the highest. Leave the car idle until the thermostat opens and then the air should come out. Once a slow consitient flow of water comes out of the screw hole put the screw back in and it should be fine from then on. You may need to do this more than once as there may be more than one air lock. So far this has happened to both of my calais over the past few years of owning them. Hope this works. 87VLT

jsut be certain you have coolant/water in there before you go stabbing it though.

What you described above happened to me as well. When it first happened I was driving on the freeway & almost **** myself, thinking some thing was wrong... but now I know it was just another holden mistake... I think that's why they used the nissan motor in the VL, otherwise if they didn't, you probably wouldn't see as many of them around today... Just my 2cents worth... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

alright fellas, the response was great, im thinking it could be the sensor, i would do what 87VLT said but i have no idea what the plenum is, i took her for a drive and the light only comes on for a minute so when it came on i had a stab and the light went out so i thought it could be air locks in it as 87VLT said. thanx again guys im taking it to the radiator place tomorrow. jezz

On top of it towards the front is where this bolt is located. I take photo's but unfortunatley both my VLs are at the workshop. I'll see if i can get photo's next time i go to the workshop.

ok I've found some pics around the joint and have modified them to show you where bolts are that you use to get rid of air locks. The one ontop of the plenum (in this case has been painted yellow) is the one you should try first. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

it may not be totally gone as there may be more small one air locks that may not be noticeable by the sensor as yet, this happened to mine and its now fine, but you'll know how to fix it.
