Luke's Berlina Turbo
Luke first bought the car in 1999 with the intentions of doing it up just a little. The first thing to do was get decent exhaust system, so an AVO mandrel bent 3" was bought and fitted. Luke says the power gain was very noticeable with a gain of 24rwkw. By then the single wheeler diff was on its last legs and so in went a 9" with 3.89 gears. After that, the gearbox was modified slightly for some firmer and more positive shifts between the gears.
This kept Luke happy for quite some time, until enough money was saved for an intercooler. It took a while but Luke finally cam across an AVO stage 2 cooler with piping and an AVO EBC which he snapped up at a reasonable price. 1/2 a day later the cooler was fitted at home in the garage along with the EBC set at 12psi, and the new power was great! That was until the turbo started making some strange rattling noises. It was subsequently sent to GCG turbos in Sydney to get hiflowed to cosworth specs.
After that, there was an 'unfortunate' accident which resulted in the front end being badly damaged but luckily no cooler damage. 6 weeks later it was back on the road with a fresh coat of 'Masai red pearl' 2 pak and 17" ANZ GSR wheels. Soon after a catch can was fitted.
The car stayed this way for about 12 months then 1 of JDCUSTOM's plenums was bought along with a new Micks Metal Craft cooler to suit the new throttle position. With the new plenum on, the car had alot more pull lower in the rev range and didn't feel as though it was struggling up top as much.
The next step was to get a stronger gearbox before the current one spat the dummy, so a Yarra Valley Autos prepped box was bought with 2800 stall. At the same time a hairline crack appeared in the diff housing so out came the diff again to be repaired and in went the new gearbox at the same time. The diff went back in with 4.11 gears.
In the very near future will be an aftermarket computer and bigger injectors will be fitted, and the boost will be screwed up some more.
