I was looking at some times run by these 2 engines and the FJ20 seems to be pulling better numbers. There are a few cars that came with the SR20 but are running a FJ20. Why is this? I thought a SR20 would be a much better engine. It is 2 generations newer, FJ20, CA18, SR20.

this is my personal opinion, although the sr20 is a great motor and very refined, in my thoughts it too fragile. I have seen the fj20's do some amazing things, a top motor

Both top motors if your into 4 bangers. Been in a Datsun 1600 with a FJ and 18psi boy did that little rattle box move. And driven a few 200SX's fairly impressive for a standard car both the S14 and later S15.

like petros said the sr20 is a more fragile engine and cant handle that much more of a beating than the fj. the sr is more of a extreme ricer engine were u put all ur lil frigen gadgets and gizmos and try n look cool with 6 blow off valves

SR20 is alloy block and they reckon they can't handle as much power as the FJ20 can. But then again I have a 200sx in a mag with like 720BHP or somethingm, so the SR can handle a fair bit.

I thought the block was cast iron.

Im pretty sure the sr20 has a aloy block while the ca18 and fj20 have cast irons blocks. The buletproof blocks as they are often called are commonly used among with others to rate the ca18 and fj20 over the sr20. They both have their +'s and -'s...however there does appear to be alot more aftermarket support for the sr20 motor, which oftens leads people to move to that motor because everyone seems to have there 2c's worth of ideas. the fj and ca have been known to hold high boost alot better as the sr's dont seem as stable under exreme preasure. then again i've been in a few dato's and rolla's across the range of engines and when done properly boy do they hammer. common debate realy...rb20det or rb30det ? same ol...

no alloy fj is iron sr is alloy that sr20 block is most probably sleeved, they both are rather strong motors. But if u were chasing massive power u would look to the rb series. Also to say the sr is 2 gens over the fj was incorrect. the sr was only brought out to replace the ca18 as a cost cutting method. The fj20 is an old engine, but is a very strong engine both top and bottom end. Is said to be a detuned version of the nissan fj24 racing engine (n/a) which was very very strong (eg massive rods and assoicated parts). With solid lifters (i think standard) they have a very high rev limit. sr20 is also a strong with 300rwkw seen on standard block many times, but its not a fact of how many people have got massive amounts of power out of standard engines, its more how many people didn't Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

There's too many variables in saying that one is better than the other in modified form unless you're talking stock engines.
