Simon's BT1 Turbo
How does 300RWHP @ 16 PSI using optimax sound? Pretty darn good in any revheads language. The car that makes this awesome power is a 1988 VL turbo BT1. Now BT1's are basically available in two colours, white or yellow. Simon happened to choose white as his weapon of choice. The white paint helps to keep the 'sleeper' image of the car and also attracts a lot less attention from the 'wrong crowd' compared to show pony yellow paint.
But this sort of power did not come with the car unfortunately. Simon has owned the car for the past two years and when he first had it dyno'd it pulled a respectable 189RWHP. Not bad, but not enough, bring on the mods!
To get things moving, Simon decided to add a Turbonetics T60-1 turbocharger on a modified exhaust manifold with a 32mm external wastegate integrated into the mix. A full three inch exhaust runs from the turbo back, and a hyperflow (huge) intercooler has been mounted or should I say squeezed behind the front bumper.
Helping the engine turnover a bit better is a JPC spec'd cam, and helping to reduce turbo compressor surge is a Turbosmart type 2 Blow off valve. Backing up all this power is a rebuilt and strengthened automatic gearbox.
One of the most commonly overlooked part of a modified car is the fuel system, and thankfully Simon has not been stingy in this department. The car is running 660CC injectors, has a Bosch 600hp fuel pump (044?) and has a complete racing style surge tank and pre-pump setup. The car also has an oil-air separator installed which allows the engine to breath a little bit better at higher power/boost levels.
Controlling the whole package is Microtech MT8 computer with hand controller inside the cabin. Sitting next to the computer handcontroller is the now customary Autometer boost gauge and Momo steering wheel. (Why reinvent the wheel?)
Simon has fitted a Group A front bar and this not only looks slick but also aids in getting more cold air to the intercooler. He has also fitted a nice set of chrome 17 x 8 Clubsport rims which really complete the car. Sitting behind these chrome rims are upgraded DBA cross-drilled and slotted discs, along with Bendix Ultimate brake pads. These help in slowing the car down from WARP-5.
Simon is yet to run his car down the quarter mile, but we look forward to seeing what his white bt1 is capable of.
