Phillip's VL - GM1986
This is Phillips white over silver 1986 VL Berlina Turbo. The original owner first sold the car 6 years ago to Phillips brother Paul.
The car remained standard for two years expect for 12 pounds of boost, which was on a switch and an intercooler.
Soon enough the tired motor gave in and the transmission decided to join in as well. The motor was rebuilt to standard specifications by standard mechanics. The block was fitted with A.C.L pistons and everything was given a freshen up. After the rebuilt the transmission was still not in the best shape and was slipping through gears.
Paul had enough of it and left it in the back yard. Phillip thought, " Well I'll give it some love." So he did when he purchased the car off his brother and took the car straight to Bresciani Performance. I think we have all heard that name before. Here it was fitted with a beefed up jatco. It had a 3000 stall and all the fruit. Soon after a AVO Stage 2, 3.9 mini spool diff, xf throttle body and a good dyno tune set the car straight. The VL was good for a high 13.
Two weeks later after enjoying the new modifications the car was pushed a touch too much and there was fuel starvation. BANG! Third piston was thinking something else. This is where Phillip thought if he wanted to persist with this car he is going to do it right the first time. Back to Bresciani Performance where the car sleeped for a few months.
The bottom end of the motor received 20 Thou over 7.5 forged A.P.E.P pistons, and Gapless moly rings. Block was machined, tested, and O ringed. Steel balanced crank and all blue printed. As for the top half it was kepted standard expect for four heavy-duty valves and valve springs. Collectors and retainers also had work done and a Bresciani spec cam was fitted.
The external components consisted of a T66 Turbonetics turbo along side a custom manifold and matching Turbosmart 45mm wastegate exiting through a custom dump pipe. 3-inch mandrel bend exhaust with high flow cat and muffler exited all fumes.
The intercooler is a custom core cooler with 3 inch pipe work feeding into an XF throttle body. The plenum at the moment is standard. Keeping it all in tune and controlling 363 Bosh injectors is a Motec M48 engine management system. To aid in pumping optimax fuel into the injectors is a surge tank, bocsh pumps, and a malpassi fuel regulator.
Inside the worn berlina interior has been exchanged into Calais comforts. Oil and boost gauges inserted to monitor his new motor. It has been fitted with a Motec shift light. All lights and bars have been replaced with new ones. The transmission is still a Jatco with all the hardware soon to be replaced with a C4. Car has been dyno at 421 HP @ the wheels on 21 pounds and will pump out around 480 to 500 horses on 32 pounds. Phillip hasn't finished yet he says there is "Much more to do."
He is thinking about changing it into a Calais. Nizpro plenum should make its way under the bonnet soon and so should more power once fitted with the new C4. Having him live down the road and gas it past my house I always look in the sky, looking for that Big Jumbo Jet.
