Just gave my n/a vl a gut full of Premium Unleaded the other day. Is it my imagination, that apart from slightly better throttle response, the car appears to use less fuel. I have done my standard commute from work and back for the week and it appears I have about one fifth of a tank more than I would have if I was running on the normal ulp. My only thought is that perhaps cause of the higher octane, the engine doesnt work as hard (except for the ritual Gateway bridge toll gate drag every morning ) and hence doesnt use as much fuel, dunno ?

Yeah, I used to run my Baby on normal fuel, until i got a load of crap fuel from BP, Since then I've used Premium all the time, and Year it appears to have slightly bigger balls, and uses slightly less fuel

I also reckon it idles nicer on premium, if that is possible for the RB30

Sometimes when premium is used in engines that werent made to run on it, eg when trying to stop pinging after the timimg has been advanced, the combustion of the fuel leaves extra crap on the pistons/valves and can result in the engine pinging again!!

After filling up one some really really nice fuel after a dose of bad stuff it almost as feels as though the car is brand new Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Actually I've heard that deposits are more a problem with the cr*p that's in LRP. No-one I know who has a pre-86 car that will run unleaded will touch LRP with a bargepole. I certainly had no problems with detonation on my '85 Alfa33 which I drove almost entirely on premium for c. 60,000k (including sprint racing) and I've noticed no problems on my VL.

Alfa 33TI and my (currently off-the-road) Jag XJ6. So has a friend with a later ('85) XJ6. In theory octane rating alone should not make a difference, but I suspect the additional refining required for premium unleaded may create a purer fuel, and apparently the optimal air/fuel ratio for PULP is slightly different from ULP and LRP. Now to have real fun, start advancing the ignition from the stock 15 degrees to somewhere between 20 and 25 (until you get detonation) and run it on premium from then on. BIG difference. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

my N/a runs lot better on Premium, using lots less petrol, not lots but noticeable. i'll take her for a long drive around chrissy and might use the 2 diff fuels for a compare

I have tried premium and noticed it runs alot sweeter but now i use nulon octane boost additive with regular fuel. The beast runs even harder and i get almost 400k out of a tank as well. This stuff also cleans the injectors and keeps the upper part of the block lubricated. I recommend you try it its around $10 from supercheap and it lasts 4 tanks.

I'm sure these fuels such as Optimax which I use have cleaning agents in them which decoke the intake, clean the piston crowns and clean the gum & varnish deposits from fuel injectors. I have heard of the Mobil Synergy and some Skyline blokes had problems with the fuel burning too fast whereas the Shell Optimax which is a higher density fuel tends to burn o.k. but you use less fuel due to the fact the injectors are squirting less fuel in to get the same performance. I remember on both the VL's I have had when I started using Optimax there wasn't a noticeable difference in performance for the first few days then engine responsiveness (mainly in the mid range) picked up dramatically, perhaps it had to clean the injectors out and decoke the intake a bit,the fuel bill stood the same even though fuel at the time was 7 cents dearer than standard. My brother went to using BP ultimate as Optimax has become too expensive for him in his VN and the performance & economy dropped off a little, the idle was also coarser,he tanked up with the Optimax and the car had a bit of a hiccup with its idle as the computer had to adjust itself to run on a higher octane fuel. What we noticed with the BP fuel is when we took the cat off the comb inside was all dark grey whereas on Optimax it was bone white.

so premuim and optimax etc are only better for injected cars? does it clean out carby engines to?

yep, cleans out carby engines too And yep optimax does have cleaning agents in it, but this tread was titled "Premium Unleaded" so i gave my useful info about PREMIUM fuel!!!

hrmm.. hahahaha !! ALL YOU N/A DRIVERS are prolly the reason why there is no ***in Optimax at any shell servos!!! and there are those big gay flyers hanging off the pumps saying "stocks have deminished, due to an increased amount of people using the fuel in their car unnecessarily, leaving poor people who drive TURBO cars 'THAT NEED OPTIMAX' to go without or fill up on unleaded" hahahahahah !!
