i used to have a have vb with a 308, dont know what was done to it other than exhaust and extractors the previous owner had done work to it, used to run 11's, was pretty quick, used to kill wrx's and vl turbos and supras and things, well i mean a lot of them anyway, sold it now, traded it for a slow ass N/A VL

You mean a 304 don't you.
I supppose to be fair you'd have to compare a standard VL 3 litre N/A to a 5 litre powered VL,5 or so years ago my first VL ws in pretty bad nick mechanically (i.e. stuffed injectors) and only had the standard 2 inch exhaust system in it,I got it up to 185 KPH tops and a VB 5 litre decided he'd have a go at me,he got to a certain point and be both evened out once he pulled up besice me (he never got any faster),the 5 litre also had at least a 3 inch exhaust system through it and I don't know if it had extractors or not.
I remember back 3 years ago when I first fitted a straight through 3 inch exhaust system into my first VL I got it up to 195 KPH while the overdrive slipped, the car also had a front group A spoiler and was lowered 2 inches and it handled great,I can only imagine it would've done over 200 KPH with the standard motor,it also had a cold air intake fitted.
There supposedly wasn't much difference in power output between the 5 litre VL and 3 litre N/A only the 5 litre had more bottom end torque but regarding the turbos they (the turbo engine) do outperform them

nope 308 is what i meant, 304's are the injected ones

are the carby 308s the ones that came in the VLs?

hmm i always thought carby VL's were 304's ie 4.9L

All V8 VL's, Weather they where Carby or EFI where a 4.9 ltr. (304 ci)

The 304 came out in the VK. The Vk also had the 308 but later switched to 304 for Group A racing.
In a normal VL it is called a 5Litre engine while in the HDT cars it was called a 4.9Litre. They had the same capacity.

27-12-03, 09:53 GMT+10#10 i didn't know that hey, why did they make them 304's instead of 308's? well my old vb was a 308 carby, went really hard 11's as i said, dont know what was done to it as we bought it like that

They changed the sizes so they could race under the international rules for group A. Under 5ltr had better weight rules or something like that.
I raced a VK 5ltr and hosed him big time coming home from Archerfield one night. It wasn't anything special but I was pretty happy!

27-12-03, 20:46 GMT+10#13 I've been in a 5L VL, nothing special compared to the n/a 6.
They _do_ sound good though, nice bit of extra torque for towing the trailer, and yeah - they use more fuel.
if you go by the "official" figures, the n/a 6 has 114kw, and the v8 has 122kw
I wouldn't buy one. if you replace it with one of the later model injected 8's it would be cool, carby motors are too old skool for me personally.

28-12-03, 16:13 GMT+10#14 yeah ive beaten a fair few pretty much standard 5litres or 4.9 litres, and ive flogged them with my n/a vl

28-12-03, 16:41 GMT+10#15 I've never raced one, let alone seen many getting under it. However I have heard from a guy that was looking at my suspension ages ago, that his v8 vl goes quite well, spinning through 1st and 2nd (auto) extremely easily. And I've seen a vk go absolutely nuts with an 8 in it. So I really have no idea. I've heard that they don't have anything special and I'd really not be one to judge until I had been in or seen some times.
Whats a stock 8 vl run down the 1/4? Saying that a 6 is 15.5 - 16

Dunno about you , but my stocker (n/a 6) ran a 16.7 but I know I can do better! I would imagine a stock v8 would be hard up cracking a 15 too.

29-12-03, 19:34 GMT+10#18 the v8's in a VL were like 124kw.. but i reckon u could get alot of power out of them with little costs.. easier to get a NA 304 goin fast then an rb30 i reckon.

30-12-03, 07:06 GMT+10#19 VL V8's, id never consider buying one unless there had been an engine transplant. Everyone i've been in that was stock, is sluggish, not realy that responsive and basically unimpressive.
A bit of work and they do go great, however you need to spend quite a bit of money to get them to be on par with the turbo's. Supercharge or something i'd be worth it...but ehh...something about seeing a carby on a VL i just dont like...

30-12-03, 07:39 GMT+10#20 well ive driven both an NA 6 and a V8, as my parents have a v8 and i have an NA, and i can tell you the v8 has truckloads more pull than my 6, it would easily cane it. as for the guys who think there NA 6 beat a VL V8, its either of 2 things, youve had a fair amount of work done on your 6 or the other guys 8 was tired and or he wasnt racing you.
yes the VL V8 is the least powerful 308/304 engine ever, but it would still easily pack it in over a 6
and my parents V8 it may have bathurst heads and a lumpy cam but it is tired and the gearbox aint all that great.
just adding to platinums comments, yes the power figures are close, but the torque figures are miles ahead, the na 6 has 247nm correct? and i believe the V8 was somewhere in the 400s,
