Hi All,
Just wondering which oil filter you guys use ? Ryco ? Repco ? Burson ? Nissan ?
I was at Garry Rogers Motorsport today in Glen Waverly and they had 600HP 7.8L V8 engines for monaro using a NISSAN OIL FILTER !!!!
I ask my mate who runs the engine dyno on these HSV beasts which usually clocks around the 600HP mark, "NISSAN make the best OIL Filters" because they dont have a restricter in them and we use them for our race cars !
So ... I thought thats mad I go and get a Nissan Oil filter (there goes my wallet !!) To my suprise the filter is actually cheaper than the rest at $7.15 ex GST. I thought these filters were $15 or more ! I know what filter I will be using from now on......
P.S I see all these mad HSV race cars there shame I cant get any pics.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
Darkstar,
Nah they are different ! My Mate who helps build the HSV 600HP monsters use them on these 600HP engines. I laughed when I saw the NISSAN oil filters.
PS Darkstar : I got a christmas present for you mate !
I call you to talk about it !

Ill keep the Genuine Nissan inmind next time im at a dealership, however im certain that the Ryco and GM ones for the RB30 are the same.
What does a remote filter kit cost these days anyway, and what benefits are there - apart from easier access to the filter and provision of running an oil cooler?

Cooper and Ryco Filters just only meet minimum requirements for warranty servicing. Purolator exceeds that as it filters more junk than the ryco and cooper filters.
K&N and Hard Driver filters are good but costly and only good if you're into serious ****e like Brent.
So for only $8.50 retail for a purolator id go with that... Cheaper for trade and mates of course where I work
yeah, we deal purolator at work....there is one mechanic that reckons he has had trouble with oil and fuel filters from them....blocking up and killing engines......but thats only one bloke out of the mechanics we deal to
Personally I run, the genuine Nissan. Ive seen these used on GTR's in Japan, so enough said, hehe
Plus they are cheaper than Ryco, Ryco are becoming a real rip.
In all honesty though there is a great article on oil filters, where someone opened them all up and done a test on filter element, drain back valve etc etc.
All of them well below standard except the imported Mobil 1 Synthetic filter about $30US
Ill try to find it for you all, its very interesting.
Uhuh, here the little ******* is

After reading that site, dont forget that manufactures tend to outsource oil filters and rebrand them, hence why i think that the ryco and GM oil filters are exactly the same.
Having said that, unless you buy a Nissan Filter from JAPAN , how do you know that your Nissan Filter isnt a Rebranded Ryco, Cooper, etc?
Ive got a ryco filter here that i took out a few thousand KMs ago, i might take it apart and have a look inside. Im due to change the GM one that i have now as well, so it will be interesting.
Speaking to a dude at my work who races Sprintcars, He used to use K+N oil filters but switched to Purolator microfine because they are cross refrenced with the K+N also made in USA. And they are alot cheaper he gets them for $4 each where as the K+N retails for $40.
As for problems well I asked him and he uses them on a $75,000 race engine that gets new oil and filter change after every race and not only that but they also cut the old filter apart to see what crap had been floating around, Which is generally a tiny bit of alloy from the engine wear.
The Purolator Microfine is a more finer filter than K+N according to him.
I might try one next time.
yeah i've heard nothing but good reports about k&n filters, shame about the price though ..... how much are they in the larger cities? their like 26 bucks up here!!
I pay 18 + gst.
All the guys with big dollar engines that I know use system 1 filters (the reuseable type) and they strip it and wash it out after every race etc.
