I was talking to MadHatter one day on IRC and this topic of the exact differences came up... I save the conversation to file, but seems i missed 1 of the differences (sorry - maybe someone else can fill it in).. anyways - from the archives on my computer - here are all the differences. [20:41:09] <MadHatter> 2. Torque converter crankshaft pivot brush is different (dont actually know wtf this means but it is apparently so) [20:41:37] <MadHatter> 3. Torque converter has marking on it, on turbo ones is says 'NGD' [20:42:11] <MadHatter> 4. 2nd gear and overdrive have different brake band servo pistons [20:42:21] <MadHatter> (have the details to the mm in this book here) [20:42:42] <MadHatter> 5. no torque converter **** in the oil pump assembly [20:42:58] <MadHatter> 6. Direct clutch drum is different [20:43:39] <MadHatter> 7. Different clutch layout for ms1 and ml4 boxes (details if you want) [20:44:09] <MadHatter> 8. the plenetary centre in the ml4 is a square and in the ms1 is a circle (?!) [20:44:30] <MadHatter> 9. different bush in front planetary sun gear [20:45:23] <MadHatter> 10. "connecting drum one way clutch assembly" is different [20:45:42] <MadHatter> 11. Vacuum diaphram is smaller in ms1 [20:46:20] <MadHatter> 12. Input shaft on ms1 does not have sealing ring and intermediate shaft is smaller [20:46:44] <MadHatter> 13 output shaft has more speedometer gauge teech [20:47:05] <MadHatter> 14. ALL the valve body calibration stats are different [20:47:23] <MadHatter> 15. presure regulator sleeves are different [20:47:50] <MadHatter> 16. **** seemingly pointless differences: [20:48:06] <MadHatter> pressure regulator plug slightly different [20:48:14] <MadHatter> pressure modifier vlave slightly different [20:48:31] <MadHatter> 1-2nd shift valve different spoo, diameter [20:48:50] <MadHatter> 2nd-3rd shift plug different spool thingo [20:49:05] <MadHatter> seperator plug has different holes [20:49:10] <MadHatter> *plate [20:49:25] <MadHatter> ok thats about it [20:49:32] <MadHatter> also the computer is different [20:49:46] <MadHatter> hope thats what yer looking for [20:49:57] <InsaneVL> ok.. cool.. thanks for that.. u should put all that in a file for future reference [20:50:07] <MadHatter> in summary, theres lots of little differences but not much strength wise [20:50:09] <MadHatter> yeah lol [20:50:17] <MadHatter> its a bitch transcribing to a computer [20:50:21] <InsaneVL> heheh yeah [20:50:32] <InsaneVL> so its not all that much stronger ?? [20:50:40] <MadHatter> nah [20:50:59] <MadHatter> just different tuning characteristics for the different power curve of the engine [20:51:35] <MadHatter> and the different sun gear and bands on 1-2nd and 2nd-3rd.. dont know how much of a difference that would make tho.. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I will be able to tell you EXACTLY all the different numbers between the two etc as I'll have both of them side by side next week. I do know there is a number underneath the jatco where the piston is and the two numbers are different. I will be able to tell you both numbers next week...

i think they both have the 4n71b stamped on the bellhousing easiest way to check though , is there is no lock up solenoid plugged into the lefthand side of the bellhousing , there is a small hole that is all. pull out the input shaft , if it has a rubber o-ring on the end it is a non turbo box. on the right side of the boxthere is a little metal tag on the inhibitor switch , it has the number x8079 stamped for a non turbo x8080 stamped for a turbo though u cant see it , the output shaft has 7 teeth on it to drive the speedo drive gear , the non turbo has 6 teeth.

Hey Petros, Don't tell me some dodgey tranny builder has built up a N/A Jatco and passed it off to you as a Turbo Jatco. I've heard of it happening before. The guy's above have pretty much summed up the differences between N/A and Turbo Jatcos.

OK i was under the impression that the Jatco was called an E4971B, when my bro got his auto done, the reciept stated that it was an L4971B i've also found some **** too: E4971B rebuild kit #DK6600B - $146.00 hope u didnt get ripped Petros.. but would definately be nice to walk in with a whopping list of differences to back up the fact that u may have been sold a dodgey tranny. Best of luck if thats the case. Ollie

petros a n/a box can be used , they have the same physical size body , most rebuilds consist of new everything inside , the only hassle would be sourcing a new drum , as original turbo drums are rare. but id still investigate it , looks as though it is a bad news for ya but
