Saturday night on my way home, I decide to do a drive by past the 5luts in St Kilda. Anyway, as I'm turning onto Grey Street off Fitzroy Street a toggy on a moto pulls me over. So he starts going over my car in great detail, trying to find everything he can. At this point I knew I was taking home a pet canary, but what I didn't know is what he was about to do next... While my bonnet was still up, he pulls out a digital camera and takes 3 shots of my engine bay. Wondering what the **** he's doing, I asked him - "what's with the pictures?". He explained to me that the BOV is illegal, and does not meet EPA Regulations. He continued to explain, telling me that if I am ever caught again with a BOV on my car, EPA will fine me $500 - and that the pictures are for evidence reason to be used in court, in the event that the Police have to prosicute me! He also explained that the BOV is higly dangerous, as it lets unburnt gases off into your engine bay which can then ignite... HA! Isn't it funny how money rules all - I mean, you could bash the sh1t out of someone, but yet you get in more trouble for driving a car that isn't road worthy? The defects I got on my car are technicalities. For example one of the things I was defected for was my tyres, which are on borderline 'road worthiness' - but I guarantee my car will still pull up quicker then half the new cars on the road, even with slightly bald tyres. It isn't about road safety, it's all about REVENUE, and it ****s me to ****ing tears.

P.S. i went for a cruise along St. Kilda on Friday and saturday night.. was amazed at the amount of police their... could have robbed a bank and not have had to worry about cops as 75% of them were along St. Kilda and at Williamstown Beach... On a good note it was good to see all the nice cars come out for melbournes good weather..

just spoke to a friend doing law.. He said they need a warrant to take photo's of anythin that is your personal property.. You shoiuld have told him to get a warrent, the worst he could have apperently done was to give you a date to go down to EPA for a photo session, of which you could have taken everything off by the time you had to be their...

Lets be honest, who the **** knows what laws exisit and don't exisit - I mean, the Police change and create new rules every year, yet I don't understand how we're meant to know them all, all the time? The photo's he took of my engine bay go into my 'file', he also sends a notice to the EPA letting them know I've know been spotted with a BOV, and it's when the EPA are notified for the second time that the ****s fine me $500, which is when the photo's may be used for evidence if I decide to fight it.

Well said VLMUZZA Why don't they put the rules out there for everyone to see, all cops are different sounds like you drew the long straw on this one. Blow off valves vent air not fuel. I was at Beacon Cove on Friday night and in about 2 hours didn't see one copper and it was packed as I have ever seen it, cars everywhere.

$500!? How long has this been going on for? a few weeks back, i got pulled over on the highway (in NSW) and the cop said that any other day(it was a public holiday) - he would have got the RTA (EPA) and they would fine me for the exhaust being to loud and "Judging by the sound of yours - it would be in the highest bracket - thats $800" WOW!! Im from canberra - and if you get defected - you just get it cleared! (for minor defects like exhaust to loud - car to low etc) and its just $30 for an inspection! Now everytime i drive interstate - I have to swap mufflers! I was amazed that they are now dishing out fines for unroadworthy cars! Getting defected - fair enough! get it fixed or else! but fines too?? Im just hoping ACT doesn't bring this in!

Can some1 clear something up for me. Surely it couldn't be the noise of the blow off? Also, how can a VLT with exhaust be too loud, yet a Harley which is about 1,000 times louder (and very annoying) be OK. I thought noise pollution was noise pollution. Why are some vehicles exempt?

Hrmm does suck to an extent, but if u keep it roadworthy, ie... good tyres, legal height, exhaust legal db and passing emissions then ur limiting ur chances of being ****ed by about 80% then it comes down to things like Bov's and other fancy colourd things u mite have clearly visible in ur engine bay.. (ie blow off valves, boost controllers, catch cans) u can hide most things pretty well, xcept the bov, but u can still have it where its 'less obvious' yes the cop was a bit of a wanker for pulling u over, but, keep it stock looking, keep ur pockets full of money. there are many very fast cars out there that have very stock looking engine bays ohh and.. just take the BOV off dude, with the money u save from defects, u'll be able to afford having it rebuilt more often than usual anyway. Ollie Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah, i heard catch cans were Illegal! The funny thing is - when I got pulled over, and got defected for noise, I also got defected cos the key could be pulled out of the ignition while the car was running (cop lent in and yanked it out!) And defected cos Ive for K-MAC Strut tops - and the plate was covering the body number... the fact that he lifted the bonnet and had an Injected VT V8 smack him in the face - and he didn't even raise an eyebrow?? ????

In Victoria motorcycles do have to be under a certain db rating to be roadworthy. It may be different in NT tho.....

As for catch cans, they are illegal - why, i dunno exactly why, but i can tell what ever the reason, it'd be a bunch of **** anyway. Basically, if you didn't buy your car like it is today, it's illegal.

Quote: are catch cans illegal? Im almost certain they are. they fall into the emissions category aswell. cause most catch cans have a breather, the breather is 'supposed' to be plumbed back into the intake piping, so the oily air can be re combusted' which totally defies the purpose of having on in the first place lol.. so those little breathers vent air to atmosphere hence they are illegal Ollie
