hey
just wondering what you guys thought of the prices i have been given for a new diff and power steering...
i need to fix the diff and i have been quoted $550 but i found out i could buy a second hand diff for $180 not sure which is the best way to go about it....my dif atm is making a high putch noise while cruising at a certian speed and it is worst between 60-70
The power steering needs to be totally replaced is leaks something cronic and i got quoted $450....
So what do u think of the prices....also if u know anywhere good in Perth to take my car so i can get different quotes that would be great thanks

Try get a second hand LSD diff more fun in wet! Is that price for the power sterring for a whole new sterring rack ? If so that seems pretty reasonable.

The power steering pump cost $10 in parts alone to rekit then there would be about 45 min - 1 hours labour to remove, overhaul & refit,I have done this myself.
The steering racks are normally just bought as a rebuilt exhange unit and which cost around $350 rekitted up my way,but then for someone to swap it around then do a wheel alignment that would be another $100 easily,I forgot to mention new fluid as well.
I rekitted my rack for about $120 including fluid ($110 for the kit and about $10 worth of fluid, actually a full 4 litre bottle of trans fluid on special, only used 1 litre),did that 3 years ago in my last VL and still goes o.k. in my current car.
Most of the cost of the rekitted rack would be absorbed in the labour of rebuilding it as there is a bit in them, but it gets easier to work on them after doing 1 or 2 of them, the teflon rings can be a pain to fit though and need to be soaked in hot tap water.
The cylinder cap for the rack is also a pain as normally a specialised tool is required to remove it ( a pin spanner) but I improvised, you can make your own out of 2 long bolts and welding them onto a piece of flatbar, then heating the rack housing up witha heatgun, butane torch, etc to expand the housing to free up the cap.
