I have been told by my mechanic that my N/A exec is running very lean. I took it him to see what the problem was when it was running very rough at idle. He said my injecters were dirty and needed to be cleaned, and he said to run a full tank of optimax and maybe even a bottle of injecter cleaner which may help. He has set everything to run rich - does this sound reasonable? Is their anything else i can do to get it running normal? Cheers.

Those injector cleaners in a bottle can only do so much, if he is sure they are dirty you can get em ripped out and ultrasonicly (i think) cleaned. Guy I bought my car off did the injectors just before I bought it...apparently helps quite a bit

Yeah the last two mechanics have told me they are clean. How much does this cost? I ahve heard about the $240 mark.

20 dollars per injector to get cleaned, so $120 for 6. You might have to pay a mechanic to get injectors out first, so factor in 2 hrs labor, and you get your $240.

darkstar, how easy is it to get them out yourself? they don't look that hard to get out, but i guess you'd have to take the plenum top half off? do the injectors just screw out or what? you don't wanna pay a mechanic to do something you can do yourself!

I just had to have my injectors fixed a couple of days ago ( 23rd jan 2004) because the car just wasn't wanting to work properly anymore. and drinking petrol. It helped out my car alot.

to take the injectors out what you have to do is take the top half of the plenum off... there is like bolts holding the plenum together so you have to unbolt them and then take the plenum off.. there is 6 nuts which need a size 10mm socket to undo them.. there is afew hoses that you have to take off just little pissy ones and then you left out the whole fuel rail as a whole... hope that heaps.. i had to do it yesturday on another motor....

you don't really have to take the top half of the plenum off. you can get them out by just unbolting the fuel rail, removing the fuel lines and removing the injectors.

are you sure of that?? think about how much room is in between the top half and the fuel rail then think about how far the injectors go in and then think how about how your going to take 3 bolts out so you can left the fuel rail out... and yes you have to take the top half of the plenum off so you can get to everything...

i had exactly same problem running lean and rough idle, turned out to be a few things, afm wasn't adjusted properly, but the biggest difference came from getting the injectors cleaned, and a can of that carby cleaner througout the throttle body. it's only an n/a but has more balls than ever now.

I have heard that ultrasonic cleaning is bad for fuel injectors, through the inter-ject website they just run a real strong chemical through the fuel system which contains a die, this changes colour if the fuel system is contaminated and they also have a device which utilises the vacuum of the motor to reverse flush the crap out of the injector baskets, etc, they do on car injector cleaning and fault diagnosis. They reckon ultrasound buggers the fine windings in the injectors and causes them to leak,by the way,if you are getting your injectors serviced there is a good chance at least a few will leak if not all, hard, rough starting and both lean running and poor fuel consumption are signs of leaky fuel injectors. I did disagree with what they said, that if the motor is hard to start after 15 minutes of sitting there,it's the injectors and if they are serviceable if they don't leak after that as I had the problem in my old engine where they leaked into the engine overnight, this was after isolating the fuel pump and blocking off between the pressure regulator and fuel rail so it had to be the injectors, this made the motor stumble when started and I was getting 200 kms per tank. Not only that a few months later the motor started to burn a little oil due to bore wash, when I was fitting the new motor a thick moist coating of carbon (burnt oil) was noticed in the dump pipe, after fitting the new motor I was getting 350 kms to 37 litres of fuel (10.5L/100 kms) whereas I was getting 250 kms to 40 litres before (16L/100 kms) with the old motor. I hopefully will better that as that wasn't with straight cruising.
