G'day guys, Im just new to the site and have a few questions needing answers. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have 280rwkw and manual and have heard that an auto would be quicker for that power. I have never been in a quick auto vl so I can't compare the two. Can anyone compare a quick auto and manual vl turbo? It is pretty hard getting the power to the ground in a manual and then you have to worry about gear changes which are pretty lengthy compared to a good auto box. Am I right? I figure if I get a trimatic, manualised which is probably the way I'd go, it would be the best of both worlds? Do you agree? Thanks

An auto would be better on the strip, but the manual is better for weekend cruising, it really comes down to what you want.

mmm 375rwhp, that's bloody movin. An auto would be easier to drive, better for drags, but I imagine you would have to run at least a 3000 hi stall to benefit from the power. This can be a bitch on the street if your car is a daily driver, especially because you'll nearly always be on the stall driving around the burbs, using heaps of fuel. Is it a weekend car or a daily driver? Auto will definately be faster in a staright line with a good stall and slicks you'll run mid 11's. cheerz morepsi

My car had 290rwhp with the highflow but I have stocker on now but with a tricked up tranny I get mega wheelspin but you a still picking up speed quickly. On 8psi, no cooler but I had the highflow on, I sh*t on a wrx start to the next couple of streets where he turned off. Even with the stocker turbo on 14psi I can take off in 2nd and spin from start of boost, I don't even bother with 1st, so with the power that you have you will still have fun but it will get down and boogy when you need it to.

Thanks guys, its a daily driver but I don't really do that much driving. What it comes down to is who can get the power to the ground and in a manual it just doesnt happen efficiently enough! I don't want to get creamed by an auto turbo with heaps less power and I think an auto would be much quicker especially with a transbrake. I can get mid 5's to 100 with my g-tech withy lots of wheelspin so with an auto and transbrake launching it at about 3000rpm I would think high 4's wouldn't be out of the question. Thats bloody quick for a two wheel drive car in any ones language! What do you think?

I've heard of 2 VL turbo's, one manual and the other auto with a stage 2 shift kit. As they were cousins, both cars had roughly the same setup. The manual ran with 16psi, while the auto ran at 9psi. Both had coolers and the auto had a stall of 2800 I think. The auto creamed the manual by a few car lengths. But then again, it's maybe the way a person drives the car. The funny thing was they swapped cars and raced again. Similar result. Just my 2cents worth Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeh go auto, 3 speeds are great fun and having a big stall isn't as bad for street driving as people think it is.

Agree! I had a 4000rpm stall and was as smooth as on the street. But yes, I had my fair share of manuals (blew them all up) and there is nothing better then snapping 2nd stepping to the left of full boost! Better then sex. But I have to admit, I done allot more dragging with the auto as getting the power down was soooooo easy! To much tyre frying in manuals i am afraid. Mind you, you don't have to worry about heating up a manual as you have to keep an eye on an auto.

I remember a few years back 2 blokes in warrnambool had vl's turbo's one was auto the other manual, they both were stock, no coolers, and the manual was always quicker than the auto, but if your doin drags go for a powerglide and a decent converter otherwise stick with the manual, more fun on the street!!! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

How r u VLRB20DET? Im down at Warrnambool too, you know me. We should start up Vl turbo brigade down here, theres so many bloody VN's with 3 inch exhaust and nothin else! Makes me laugh when I go down the main street! Auto sounds great but not too good on the juice 20L/100km? is that normal? Just have to save up for an auto now as Im getting a gt35 and traction will become harder to keep hold of.

Straight line work isnt really that fun for me anyway, i like to kick the tail out and be in total control of the car through selecting gears. Hmmmm i currently have a vision to get either this VLt or my next car pratically ' on ice ' and in manual. Auto is good for the strip, manuals are where the fun factor comes in. The manual boxes can and will last if you treat them well, and a set of slicks will be needed in any case with your power down the track anyway. If you want traction off the line, have low boost to start off on, then flick the boost on halfway through 2nd gear and hang on to the car just incase it goes sideways Up to you man, if you got the 4k to get a decent auto setup from scratch, go for it, but ide be keeping your setup as fun is more important in my books than compleating the quarter under a certain time limit Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Thanks for your comments darkstar. Manuals are great fun but I'm lookin for at least 310 rwkw with the gt35 for the street and anywhere up to 380 rwkw if its tuned for the drags. I do treat the box well but I just don't think it will hold up with that much power. I'm thinking of selling it and then at least ill have some money for the auto. A manualised auto wouldn't be too bad cos you still have to change gears but yeah I do love manuals. A 6 speed supra box would be good too!
