Im not sure if i heard correctly, but the gold vl PLATNM users two bovs to regulate its boost, since there is no wastegate on the turbo. Ive got a blitz bov that i took off as soon as i got my VL because i like the flutter noise instead of the psssh. I might be getting a t04 to put on my engine, and i was wondering weather i could use the bov to regulate the boost, much like PLATNM, which will save on the expensive cost of an external wastegate. Heres a picture of what im talking about. How does his setup work? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

wouldnt those vacuum tubes off the BOV's go to the nipple on the compressor cover of the turbo, and then through trial and error, the BOV's would be adjusted, or possibly have different springs put inside them to vent boost at certain pressure or some ****.. makes sence that they could work to me. Nizpro came up with this idea. but turbo matching is critical. a W/G is only 700 dollars, I dont think it would be a cheaper way out, just looks cool.

the last fast fours & rotaries technical handbook has an artical on this and discuss the issue with nizpro. you can even wire an internal wastegate shut aswell! I can't see it would be any good on a car equipped with an afm before the turbo (and bov venting to atmosphere) as the ecu will think all the air is going into the engine when in fact some of it is getting bled out through the bov to maintain a pressure (and she'd run rich). But if the afm is placed after the turbo and after the bov's it will be measuring the actual air going into the engine and she'll be apples. I read the ff&r article and plan to try this on my r31 project car.

I'll Never get tired of looking at PLATNM's engine bay. Great work Danny. Id say you would have to have MAP sensor running for this application to function or you would get massive overfueling and other assorted problems. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

u would be stupid to do it without the use of aftermarket management

yeah u would be pretty stupid.. cause it probably isnt possible without A/m engine management.

wouldn't that stess the turbo lots and wear it out faster as it will keep spining faster and faster as the revs go up

Not 100% sure, but I think it might have some problems.

Thanks for the heads up HSVSUX et al. I guess i could run a 32mm gate or something cheap like that, anyone got a gate they want to let go? 700 is a bit steep for my liking... im trying to push performance on a tight budget with the standard computer as well and some aux injectors.

using bov's to limit boost... as you're driving along and they're doing they're job limiting, would it sound like it's constantly venting to atmosphere? I like the theory, wouldn't be able to stand the constant noise!

Engine bay looks sweet. Pity about the wastegate setup! 1. Someone once said that it make the turbo spin its nuts off all day cause there is no exhaust by-pass. Nizpro replied by saying "Since we are venting off the pressure, there is not as much air entering the engine and hence not as much exiting (exhaust) the engine. So the turbo doesn't spool as hard. so its all good" - WRONG 2. Think about this - Identical Engines, one with an ext gate, one with two pop-off valves. At 20psi, bosstin down suburban roads (Er, drapstrip) the wastegated engine has its ext gate open partially to mainatin constant boost. So there is 20psi intake worth of exhaust gas MINUS wastegated flow passing through the turbo. The other engine has 20psi intake worth of exhaust gases all passing through the turbo. So No, the exhaust flow through the trubo is not the same. 3. Anyone who tells you that they make more power with twin BOVs are liars. Since there is so much more energy spinning the turbine, it is going so much faster, and pushing more air out the compressor, while heating and turbulating it at the same time. Why heat and mess up the intake air just to blled it off? Makes no sense. 4. Only advantage is cost. Not 100% sure of power differences, but its enough for me to buy a Pro-Gate . Definitely worse for the turbo though. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

How can it be an advantage on cost, you can pick up second hand external gates for between $400- $500, those two blowoff valves on PLANTM would cost you easy $700 -$800 plus fitting. Also it cant be that great system as Rajabs who use to use this system have now gone away from it on all the VL's, using instead turbosmart external gates, Nzpro are the only shop that continues with this method, and it aint cost effective.

Regardless of the costs and setup, it obviously works well for nizpro and danny, the proof is in the pudding. Thanks for the info, i was interested in the setup and what were the pros and cons of it. Obviously faster spool up time and keeping the turbo spinning at a higher rpm (within efficientcy and manufacture's claims) are the benefits. Maybe not the best setup as proven by the other cars running external gates and the theories around, but it definately works so congrats to those that did something different with astounding results.

But I agree, its not that cost effective. The only time it will help spool quicker is if you are running heaps of boost and get wastegate creep. You won't get wastegate creep if its controlled properly. And I didn't say you couldn't make power with the setup, you'll just make more power with an External gate.

is this car just for draging or a car for street use
