Ok just wondering out of the Turbo series boxes which ones are 4spd.
Is the T400 a 3 or 4spd box?
Is the T700 an electronic controlled box?
Which is a good 4spd box that could handle around 500hp?
Cheers,
pete.

Yeah I want a 4spd auto but I might need to suck it up and get the three speed going.
Im not looking forward to going driving on the highway if I get a 3 speed though.
I have a sub article in an old Zoom where some gearbox place down south was building tranbrake equipped Jatco's that could handle a VLT with enough mumbo for a mid 10 second pass. Might have to dig that mag out and get the number.
Cheers boys.

As far as I know only the VR and beyond T700's are electronically controlled. Castlemaine Rod shop will have a conversion kit if you wish to put a VN-VP T700 behind that injected V8 And yes regardless of what people will say a well built T700 would handle 500hp. PM me if you ever need a well priced rebuild on one.

Check that it still has four speeds though! From what I've seen most high-performance Jatco mods end up sacrificing fourth gear.

Old Fart, I found the article. It was a 4spd Jatco with T/Brake etc that was built by Hugo's but I called them today and they said they didnt make the thing anymore as the Jatco cannot handle anymore than 280kw as a 4spd before it dies.
VLT_Wagon 88. I will keep that in mind. Gotta reserch every possible aspect before I commit myself.
Cheers boys.,

24-09-03, 23:54 GMT+10#10 yeh the turbo 700s in the vr/vs are the same as the vn/vp ones but are electronically controlled...
talking to the trans place here, they drop 4th when they strengthen them... if u keep the 4 they said not to put to much of a load on 4th if ur motor has the power

27-09-03, 17:31 GMT+10#15 the TH700 can be made to handle a lot of power, but its hard to find a place to do a good job on them outside the US

28-09-03, 16:00 GMT+10#16 The TH700R's were used in the series 1 VN's but in the VN series 2 onwards with electronic control were called a 4L60E transmission.
in my experience I have found the standard Jatco to be weaker than the TH700R as I had Jatco's in my last VL ,2 of which failed in the N/A car let alone a car with 280 KW,they had high kilometers on them (the first 300,000 kms when it failed, the second about 200,000 kms),the first just wore out and needed a rebuild while the second stuffed up when my brother panicked and put it in drive when just merely rolling backwards, that stuffed the housings up inside the box,we had a recoed transmission rebuilt of the 2 which was never right as the overdrive always vibrated no matter how much we took in back under warranty.
It might seem a bit critical talking about such high kilometer transmissions but the turbo 700 was behind a much torquier engine (Holden V6) and did lots and lots of heavy towing (i.e. horses) whereas the VL never did,we took the VN's unit out at 500,000 kms,it was still going but was tired and could do with a freshen up as my brother had the car, wanted to freshen up the motor and fit a Supra 5 speed to it,the car already had a major makeover cosmetically.
The thing also to get more life out of a Jatco the car must be driven in "power" mode in the city or under load whereas it doesn't matter so much with the TH700.
As for fitting a TH700 from a V8 behind an RB30,that's no good as the bolt pattern is completely different (Turbo V8 bolt pattern) whereas a V6 stud pattern closely resembles the shape of the RB30 bolt pattern and can be more easily modified, these boxes are used behind very high powered cars in America (Buick Regal turbo, same motor as a VN except turbocharged) and are stronger than the Jatco, they have also been used in VLT's.
