I'm thinking of getting a VR SS, a few guys have them on here so I was after some info. Firstly are the VR V8s 185kws or 165kws? Cause I know that the VN/VP V8s were 165kws, so if VR V8s are 185kws then what has been done to them to get that extra power? If they are only 165kws then I'll probably get a VN/VP because they are so much cheaper. They come with LSD? I want LSD for burn....um...off road driving.... Any other info would be appreciated, along with market value etc. Cheers fellas

As far as I know only the HSV optioned SS scored the 185kw (these cars will be HSV plated) like my old one Power was increased via, recalibrated engine management incorporating a knock sensor, HSV extractors, larger CAI and a dual, twin cat exhaust system. All the other 5.0L's (VN-VS) put out 165kw. The only change that occured between the VN and VR 5.0L was a different starter motor for the later engine. If you have the money definately go for a VR, they are priced between $10,000 and $14000 on average with better prices fetched for immaculate low klm cars. With the VR comes the advantage of ABS and IRS which in my opinion make a much safer car. Not to mention the fact that they'll be in better condition and have less kilometers than the VN. LSD was optional across the range. Hope that propaganda helped. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

thanks for the info man, I'll see how finances play out. Also the VN is lighter than the VR right? Though I do like the VR chassis better. Any advantages to the VP over the VN, apart from less ks etc. What's a good price for a VN? In the trading post they are anywhere from $5,000 to $12,000

Also how much would it cost for the engine management, extractors, CAI and dual, twin cat exhaust system. Would aftermarket mods like these fetch the factory 20kws extra, or more? Is is worth getting a HSV or doing aftermarket mods to a 165kw 5.0?

Hey 2bad, i own a vr ss.. i didnt know anyone else on this forum had one that i knew of :P some used to own yeh them mods though would easily get the extra 20kw in my opinion... let these motors breathe better and they'll go alot better.. i also think the vr/vs ss interior is nicer... just to give u an idea of what mine came out with.. its a series 2 vr ss, has a factory electric sunroof, windows, aerial, cruise control, abs, srs air bag, lsd, irs, central lockin, a/c.. best thing would be to go have a test drive in a few and see what you like better.. i know a good cam and chip package for this motor with cold air and exhaust will put out around 200rwkw or close too.. have a mate that got these figures.. if the dyno was right.. i have seen the printout Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

170rwkw's on a dyno dynamics dyno, with a secret chip and cam combo . CAI, twin 3 inch with hiflow cats. This was with the knock sensor equipped factory 185kw motor.I'll find a scanner and scan the printout Jet Pilot- sounds like you scored with those as the SRS airbag was a HSV Option in SeriesII's. Its not plated is it? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

when i brought it, it had the hsv enhanced 185 badgin and that, but i debadged the car, so it just has, ss, series 2, and v8 on it.. looks cleaner in my opinion, but yeh it doesn't say anythin anywhere else... i was goin to get the build number and all that and ask holden about it.. but yeh its got almost all the options i like it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

2bad - Just a slight OT point but are you are planning to drop a stroker crank into the block? If so a VN/VP block will require machining to make the crank fit. A VR/VS block does not require machining. It might be not be a great concern to yourself but just be aware of that when you purchase the car.

vn to vr's have the same block so there is still some maching involved to get them to fit. wasnt till vs onwards that they made them to fit but still there isnt a great amount of maching to be done anyway

yeh all of them were 165kw unless hsv enhanced to the 185kw.. which wasn't a hard task... i think it might of been the vt 5.0L's that got 168kw from the factory.. someone will know for sure though

why the hell would a injected v8 from holden come out with a standard 165-8kw when the supercharged v6 from vs onward got 170+kw?!!? (unsure of exact figure) - f u k i n DI CKHEADS!!!

i thought they were: VN 5.0ltr = 160kW, HSV enhanced = 180kW not 100% VP 5.0ltr = 160kW, HSV enhanced = 180kW not 100% VR 5.0ltr = 165kW, HSV enhanced = 185kW VS 5.0ltr = 168kW, HSV enhanced = 195kW VT 5.0ltr = 179kW, HSV enhanced = 215kW, supercharged V6 = 171kW i think holden actually thought it was time to get serious with the v8 as the VT series 1's got the last of the Aussie 5.0ltr and the supercharged was now more in power. also i think some HSV's in the VT 5.0ltr could get 225kW but not 100%
