Hey,
I am currently thinking about what i am goin to do with my stereo and was wondering what you guys think of having 6" splits in the front and rear and allow the subs (or sub), to provide the bass rather than say a set of 6X9's?? I currently have a set (6X9's) and think they are a bit bass-ey for an in-cabin speaker... What do you guys do, also whats the go with 6X9's and the law (parcel shelf)?? Any suggestion or setups you guys have would be appreciated...
Cheers,
Rob

my car being a rolla its different sound completely.. but i get **** all bass outa my 6x9s
when i was lookin at a VL i was planning on 6" splits in all doors and subs to do bass..
another idea ive seen lately is 6" splits in front doors and 4" splits in rear parcel shelf with tweeter pointing towards rear passanger.. that would provide all your definition for the cabin and then ud just need solid bass from the boot
maybe some normal 6" 3 way speakers would be ok in the rear.. all u really want is rearfil cause ur subs handle your bass

Well I've always been told and tended to agree that if you are going to eventually run sub/s - why would you need the extra fill coming from 6x9s?
6x9's in the parcel shelf, well, can't cut into it - but, it doesn't stop most people, but if you don't want to you can always buy spacers. Or make some up yourself.
It all depends what you want from your stereo, loudness or clarity I guess. If I could do mine again, all I would do would be buy some 6inch splits, some six inch coax and a sub or two in the boot for bass. Nothing flash - but it works.

yer i would highly recommend splits in the front, i used to run the stock speakers in the front :S 6x9's in an mdf parcel shelf and a 800watt amp powering a 12" sub in the boot. good bass and it went real loud, but the quality wasnt there. i recently chucked in some 6.5" boss splits in the front and arseholed the stock front speaker out and the quality is just there. ive also been told that its real good to have an amp powering ur splits, and one for ur sub (providing u have one), but yea 6x9 r just their for rear fill, and after all u want ur best sound to be comin from the front, but yea i would strongly recommend a splits and amp/sub combo. i wouldnt worry about the 6x9 being too bassy inside the cabin, an easy way to avoid that problem and to let ur sub provide all the bass is to put the bass setting/s on ur head unit to low and turn the gain on ur amp to high, fiddle around with it that way and u should be able to fine tune it.

yeah thats true pacemaker, but what I don't get is why have 6x9's there if your going to be turning down the bass anyway?

yea i see where ur comin from, i guess splits in the front and back would be awesome, all round quality, but itd be way more straining on the old hip pocket. but i think most ppl prefer the ol 6x9's on the shelf cause theyr loud. Sure theyr not the best quality but they pump up way better than splits i reckon, and that probly appeals to a lotta ppl - make a lot of noise, attract a lot of attention. but yer theyr just rear fill

basically have good set of splits up front powered by amp simple coaxs rear runnin of the headunit highpassed and subs and amp,6x9's are only good if you dont have a sub/or intend to get a sub. btw rear shelf speakers are only for the ppl in the back seat anyways.

well yer thats rite, u want ur best sound comin from the front cause theres always gonna be a driver in the car, namely urself, and who cares about the ppl in the back anyway

I have Alpine 6'splits in the front and 6x9's in the rear of my wagon.I know wagons are a different sound alltogether, but I think the 6x9's give me all the bass I need.It also depends on your style of music as well.I've had people looking everywhere for my subs because they don't believe that I don't have any.

14-09-03, 04:56 GMT+10#10 For sure, When I first got a sub in my car, powered by a pissweak little amp, I'll admit, My mates, both in gemini's with 6x9's were overpowering the bass that I had. And fair enough, my ears were hurting when I got out of them cars, But.. on the other hand.. After getting another sub and a Better amp in my car, I can feel the bass. The bass is clear, the treble is clear. And its just as loud.
Whereas the mates cars, It was loud, but as soon as you get to a certain point, the bass distorts, and the treble takes over and kills the Middle ear.
But yeah, theres been times where I've been almost certain that the 6x9's could not possibly be putting out that kind of bass. But they were, freaky really.
Also, another mate has an old charade, 6x9's in that is all you need. But for a commmy, its a bit larger, I don't know, I've experienced all ranges of stereo's and I'd have to go Sub and Splits..
Thats just me though, I'm sure everybody would disagree in tuning an equaliser.. Some would have more bass, some would be treble, some would be equal, etc..
I had 2x12s in my car, and a mate turned the bass off, and had treble up.. I honestly didn't know wtf he was doing.. But thats how he liked it. Queer.. But true.

22-09-03, 14:43 GMT+10#12 It all depends if you are runin a sub tho, splits are good in the front for that clarity but if u want a bit of bass and range from the back SICX9s are good. and caus its a relativly larger car if you put splits in the back only the passengers will appreciate the sound. If u are going to have the sub running with alot of bass it will overrun the 6X9s if u have them on the shelf.

23-09-03, 16:51 GMT+10#16 a mates done that with his - gets pretty damn loud, but I couldn't handle the amount of treble that was still there, and even towards the top end it was distorting.
Personal choice though really.

01-10-03, 23:24 GMT+10#20 from previous experience - i had 4 pioneer 6" 2 ways in all 4 doors of my gemi runnin off 50w pioneer headunit, and two huge kenwood 7x10s off 400w amp - and the 7x10s put out ***in ****LOAD of bass - no need for sub - it was loud enough.
to me 6x9s sound to punch - 7x10s r ***n monsters that make heaps of in cabin bass.
